Speeding cop van kills pedestrian
KOLKATA: Reckless driving has caused another life to be snuffed out in the city, but this time the culprits are the lawkeepers themselves. A man was killed by a speeding police patrol van on Sunday.
The middle-aged man was crossing Central Garden Reach Road, near the ITC cigarette factory, when the accident occurred. He came in the path of a speeding police patrol jeep from the Watgunge police station. The driver spotted him and applied the brakes but it was too late by then. The vehicle dashed into him and he was knocked down.
As he lay on the ground bleeding and writhing in pain, the policemen who were in the jeep picked him up and took him to SSKM Hospital. But he was beyond help by then. He was declared dead at the hospital.
The patrolling party was returning to the Watgunge police station after night-long duty. The police have tried to establish his identity, but it could not be confirmed till late on Sunday.

Trooper Disciplined Who Left Baby Alone In Car During Arrest
The Colorado State Patrol says it has taken action against the trooper who left an infant and a 15-year-old girl in a car alone when he arrested a woman after a traffic stop.
Patrol officials say they can't release any additional information regarding Trooper Jeffrey Verbas because it's a personnel matter.
A Keio Saupauia says Verbas arrested her on a 10-year-old warrant for a dog violation shortly after pulling her over at about 11 p.m. on April 28.
Verbas called Saupauia's sister to pick up her seven-month-old daughter and 15-year-old niece who were with her Saupauia but allegedly did not wait. The two were unattended in her car for about 25 minutes.
