^ Agreed - I think that a precise cause will continue to elude our analysis, until more in-depth research has been done on this issue.
However, in addition to the above suggestion by
MetalFlame, we also do have certain outright knowledge-holes in this particular assessment - we don't really know what other materials/finishes your particular grill,
dj, consist(s) of.....

Although it should be polymer-plastic, it's still possible that the finish and/or its core - or even part of its constituency - may run afoul of some of these very concerns listed.
Similarly, looking back at the way
MEM-TEK dissected the issue of
thestaton's vehicle grill, on page 3 of that reference thread.
There simply may be underlying issues that caused your difficulties, that are not clear at the present time, with what little we know.
