Default Suction cups that REALLY suck - in a good way.

I've always wondered why a company would spend a small fortune to develop a RD and then provide you with a flimsy mount with flimsy suction cups.

I was in Home Depot and found some suction cups that looked about the right size but much sturdier than the ones I got with my Escort RD. They fit perfect. I have not had them very long but they sure suck and grip a lot stronger than the ones that came from Escort. Cost is $2 for a pack of 4. Passing info along to those frustrated with their flimsy and finicky Escort cups.

Those look great. I'm going to have to stop by my local home depot and see if they have them. The Escort ones are terrible.

They also fit great on the V1 mount. However, I just noticed that the mount I was using for my Escort was not the original mount. It is one they were testing that had the little lever that you pressed to release the suction. That mount work terrible for me so I stripped it down of the parts and used the suction cups from the original Escort mounts on it. Today I found the original Escort mount and the HD cups fit loose on that mount. Still holds the mount sturdy while on the windshield but when you take it off the windshield the cups can come off the mount unless you do something to make the cups fit more snug. Sorry I missed that. I tightly wrapped 20 turns of dental floss around the neck and the cups and now they don't fall off the mount when you take it off the windshield. Sounds redneck but you don't notice the floss. You could use black thread if you are super anal.

I'm going to try the floss out too and see how that goes. That's one thing I hate, is that the Escort mount is terrible.

I said that (although I doubt I was the first to say it)...

although the Escort suction cups do not seem to respond to the boiling as well as others. They must be made with a material that is different from other units. Also, 4 suction cups from Valentine are $1, two of which are XL size and they are made of silicone and are heavy duty. They last much longer than most and they do not start to 'move' half way through their life. So why are 4 Escort suction cups that do not last nearly as long SIX TIMES that amount? That's one major issue I have as that price difference is almost ridiculous. I use the V1 suction cups on my Belscorts. I just use a rubber band to wrap the top.

i agree with that, but i also think it also depends on the curve of the windshield and how high you mount it, i noticed when i mounted near the very top, it tends to comes off alot frequently than at all. also on certain spot it just wont stick. and i'm using the big XL cups from V1. you just have to find the right spot and make sure you keep it there everytime.
