View Full Version : X50 showing signs of going out the door......

my X50 is now starting to give me problems and has been for awhile.... Here's my problem..... Out of nowhere the scanning dot will start to pause for about 1 second then go again then glitch again and so on and so forth, no self-cal message at all though. So I was wondering if I was able to pick up a radar signal while this glitching was going on because I still had no self-cal message. It doesnt do it that often, however I was a bit nervous about it for obvious reasons (me possibly not being protected from radar). I just turn the X50 off and back on again and it normally runs fine.... however there is no telling when it will start glitching again and it always glitches at random times during my driving. so yesterday I noticed it starting to glitch again and I was coming up to a K-band false at the local Sam's club up the road about 2 miles.... so I decided to just leave it on this time and see if I picked up the false alert..... I got to where the false normally starts and heard nothing. I turned the X50 off and turned around and ran at the false alert again and picked it up as I have always done in the past. I now know that this problem needs to be fixed but what I don't trust is Escort to fix the problem right.... I dont even know what the problem is or what could be causing it in the first place... I am worried about sending it in to them to fix, them turning it on and seeing it work fine (as it normally does anyway) and just sending it back to me without anything being done at all. Since there is no self-cal message and it works fine most of the time anyways how do you diagnose that problem?? I am going to send my 9500i back due to low sensitivity and my red X50 back for repairs and get the Blue display like I have always wanted. I am going to be giving the red display to my father who does'nt know that much about radar detectors like I do. I am worried about this detector not performing well for him. I would hate to give my dad a bad RD and him getting a hefty ticket. I want to make sure that it works before I send it to him. Any help from the professional users on this forum would be helpful... Thanks

Brandon

In my opinion it sounds like and over heating issue.
Like the electronics inside are getting way to hot for normal
operation.

I've always been told that the scanning dot just wasn't for eye
candy but to let the user know that it was working correctly
and had not over heated. I'm sure this feature is mostly
used in places like Phoenix where it gets extremely hot
in the summer months.

Yea that might be true.... I have the scanning dot up there so that I can see if it is functioning properly, but my dad doesnt like the scanning dot and he will be getting rid of it once he gets the RD. He says it just annoys him to see that dot scanning constantly, he just wants it to say "Highway" and doing that isnt going to tell him if its working or not.

Rev.5....... and I am a little nervous about getting the blue display that I want to get because it will be rev. 6.1 and I just saw that post saying it looks like it has less sensitivity..... So I hope thats not true

Escort says there isn't a difference between the rev's but with all the talk on this board, I beg to differ. I currently have a Rev. 5 and it seems to do it's job well. A lot of people have stated that POP falses less with Rev. 6 but I can't say much for that because I have POP disabled.

Humm. It really surprises me that you haven't had a Self Cal message but
it could be getting ready to happen....

Have you tried a Reset on the unit?
that may help....

I reset the unit about 30 minutes ago.... we shall see if I get the glitches in the scanning dot this week sometime... hopefully I won't

Honestly, I don't think it's heat. I've had mine for 2 years and it was left in 100 degree weather.

I'm in Indiana right now and it's always 40-50 degrees here. I am getting problems recently too due to "Service Required" and "Cal1 Error" and "Self Cal" failures.

It is the radar detector. Something internal is BROKEN, not due to heat, but something else. Maybe a surge?

It's $60 to fix... + ship

I dont think the scanning dot tells you if your RD is functioning properly or not. I rather feel it's there just to look at.- Correct me anyone if I am wrong.

well when your scanning dot starts to glitch and you can no longer detect radar signals and there is no self-cal message.......... wtf??? that may not be the primary purpose of the scanning dot, ur right, but it works in my case. Also so far the scanning dot has not glitched since reseting it to factory settings and it seems to be in order again..... I cannot explain this whole thing, but I am still a little concerned that I had these problems in the first place.

Have you checked the line voltage to the X50. Just a hunch! 8)
