i just watched the video on radarbusters about veil. and im about to get a new car! i was wondering if this is a good investment. i just invested into an escort passport 8500(yes no x50 because it was cheap) should i also invest into veil?!

veil will aid in detecting threats by giving u those extra few seconds to slow down

Save up some more cash and get a jammer 8)

If you're looking to save money, you'll need to sort-out your "need" both ways.

Active laser jamming is the only true "defeat" out there, particularly if your vehicle is larger, of the "wrong color/finish," or if it has difficult hard-points.

If your vehicle fits such a profile, or if your locals use extreme-close engagement distances or utilize hardware for which VEIL doesn't work all that well against - well, then you're better off shunting that $100 towards the purchase of a good jammer.

However, if your locals use devices for which VEIL offers good protection and/or they do not engage in otherwise "difficult" engagement practices or you have a naturally "stealthier" car to begin with, then yes, VEIL can not only be a good stopgap measure (until you've saved-up enough for a good jammer), but it can also help the jammer do its job better.

Most new cars will not look very good with Veil on them. An active jammer is the only way to beat laser. I do however like the idea of using every counter measure that is at my disposal due to the lethality of laser. I own a can myself.

The question that you will have to ask yourself is do I want to put this stuff on my new car :?

I know TSI+WRX had posted in another thread that his can was still unopened.

Buy a jammer. There are a few that work very well. No they are not cheap but having to go to court and fight tickets is not fun and can become expensive and time consuming.

^ Exactly.

My concern is mainly aesthetic. I'm kinda vain when it comes to my car. I really don't care if others think it looks good or if it looks ugly - I'm just out to please myself, and I want a smile on my face when I flip the garage door open first thing in the AM. :) It makes going to work just a little easier.

My secondary concern - but one which jumps in magnitude when my baby's in the car with me - is that of light output. Even a single coat of VEIL has been said to reduce lighting output by 20 to 33%, give-or-take/depending on application. That's not an acceptable compromise for me; there's a reason why I spent nearly $100 upgrading my conventional headlights the way I did, and it's not to see worse at night or during inclimate weather.

I have settled on using VEIL selectively. The can will be opened and I will make my applications when I take long road-trips, which typically, for my family, are driven during the daylight hours.

I believe in the synergy of passive protective measures. That's why I have replica plates - it's also why I utilize LaserShield. I firmly believe that VEIL will be a good compliment to my active jammers, and will further reduce my chances of receiving a viable laser lock.

I wish I could use LaserShield but plate covers are illegal in my state.

I had mentioned in another post that upgrading the headlight bulbs would compensate for the light loss.

TSI+WRX you had mentioned color shift as also potentially being a problem. I guess I'll have to see what my headlight output is like after using Veil (It needs to warm up for me to apply). Safety does come first though.

In my current vehicle aesthetics are not my primary concern, but I plan on purchasing a new vehicle, so I will soon face the same dilemma.

I don't think that you are being vain at all, you are simply taking pride in what you own. Just out of curiousity how much do you like the 2.5GT. I'm thinking about looking at one and was just curious how much you like the car :!:

^ Understood. That's definitely a hard one to get around.

I think that you can indeed recover a bit of headlight brightness (maybe even all) to overcome for that aspect of VEIL. I think that with even a 10W increase, i.e. using "substitute" traditional halogens that are slightly overwattage, you should be just fine.

However, indeed, the color-shift is another concern for me....

Since I'm an Import "Sport-Compact" enthusiast and frequent such Forums, I sometimes (and unfortunately, not too rarely) see postings from fellow enthusiasts who were targeted/profiled for enforcement - and their lighting choices were known issues/factors. There's quite a few who openly admitted upon talking to the officers that had they not had HID headlights (even factory/OEM/stock-on-vehicle), they more than likely would not have been "selected" from the stream of passing vehicles.

As such, any color-shift toward the bluer end of the spectrum presents as a concern for me, particularly in my local area. Hopefully, where you do your primary driving, this won't be as much of a concern. :)

:) I have to admit, I like her a lot.

I originally came into the purchase looking to get a WRX station-wagon to compliment my wife's WRX sedan. However, I ended up test-driving the LGT just for-kicks, and I fell in-love with her instantly.

I come from an exclusive-DSM background, and I'd wanted something that would effectively "get me out of the 'tuner' crowd." I thought, at the time, that the LGT would do that, as it provided a good compromise between performance (straight-line) and luxury/family-orientation (which was something that I'd been seeking).

Unfortunatley, the LGT didn't quite succeed in the former sense, as it is imminently mod'able.

So far, she's been a quality ride. Nothing that I can really complain about. Dead-reliable (knock-on-wood!), even though she's been at what's considered "Stage II" power-levels (performance equals or exceeds that of stock STi/STI or EVO) for nearly 15,000 miles now.

I guess it's a matter of what you're looking for in a vehicle. :) This one, for me, was a compromise that I sought out as we were about to have Anna at the time, and Sara wanted her to ride in something that's "not as obnoxious" as my last DSM.

Please let me know if I can be of further help. :)

I realize that this is not the proper forum for me to ask all of these questions, however, I'm curious what you did for mods to get to "Stage II" power-levels and what that added to the sticker price.

I like the car and feel that it would be useful for me in my area of the country due to weather conditions. I like the all wheel drive idea. I know it doesn't make you god, but there are times it doesn't suck either

No problem - I'll give you a PM just as soon as I can get to it.

:)

For general reference, it's more or less just some exhaust-piping work, plus an ECU reflash to take advantage of the ability of the vehicle to breathe better. Details coming. :)

Exactly - even AWD still must subscribe to the laws of physics. You can get going forward a lot easier, and extract yourself from some pretty nasty situations where you'd otherwise be stuck, but once you start going around a bend or try to come to a stop, physics is impossible to argue against.

If winter-weather is a concern, think about going with dedicated winter tires. Compared against an AWD vehicle equipped with "typical" all-seasons, a front-driver on good dedicated winter tires can literally drive circles around it. The pairing of dedicated winter tires with a good AWD system would be, however, a near-guaranty of not only excellent performance, but ultimate safety.
