Default new sti gets "service required" message

    Hi all,

new to the board. I'm a new user, and so far pleased w/ the performance of the STI and still gaining confidence in RD's.

today i was driving up 95 and i noticed this message come on. I also noticed that the RD was maybe hotter than usual. I turned it off and turned it back on. It took about 5 minutes and the message came on again.

Next i tried blasting the AC full blast, and tilting my sunroof to get some airflow going. After about 20 minutes of this, it never came back on and it seems to work OK when i get K falses at shopping centers at about the same distance/measurement guaging by certain points and using the threat display.

Is this something i need to worry about? how good is the "self check" when my STI turns itself on and off. If it does not come back on again, should i not worry about it? Is it definitely out of calibration since this message came on? or is it like a hard fault in an ECM that can possible be erased like if you just get bad gas? Does the STI know if it is still in good working condition after a self check and the message does not come back on? I posted a reply to R Roy, but i'm worried if i should even trust it since this message came on. I now know i should turn it on after starting my car and turning it off before cutting it off. Before i just left it on and let it self turn off by keying off. Maybe i screwed w/ the electronics by doing that? did i just screw my warranty by doing that?

    thanks for replies,

    Mark

What company did you purchase your STi from and what revision is it?

    Current revision is A3 M8.

i purchased from radarbusters i think. The company Radar Roy sells them.

I prepaid for mine several months before i received mine.

How do i check which revision i have? i'm new to RD's.

    thanks for replying so quickly!,

btw, is this message something i should sent it back for? or is it just an "alert" that it needs to be turned off? I was driving in stop and go traffic when this came on and it got hot in the car (wasn't running AC since i was cruising at 80+ before i got the message) maybe the sti has a sensor which measures temperature and alerts the user?

hold down the mute and sens button when turning on the detector. This is also a reset so the detector will go back to it's default settings. PM RadarRoy or call him, he can advise you if you need to send the unit in for service. Hopefully it was just heat like you think it was. I always take my STi down off the windshield and put it in the center console when I park my car in the sun.

well if it continues to do it send it back to Roy, his customer service is A Class and he will do everything in his power to recify it for you.

    Jamal,

I just checked my revision, and it is the current one you posted.

Possible that i may have some problems in the future? or should it be OK, if the message does not come up? I would hope a $450 electronic device has some kind of self protective feauture that would power itself off if it got too hot. I do take it down if it is pretty hot outside though,

My STi did what yours has done, twice. On hot days I have to keep the AC blowing on the front of it to keep it cool, after these first two instances, early last month, it has not repeated it again. Its starting to cool down over here now so I don't need the AC on it to keep it cool, however it still gets quite warm.

The performance as far as I'm concerned is great and I would recommend it to anyone.

Now if Bel can ensure that they can keep it undetectable, that can be all anyone could ask for.

Oh no! The dreaded service required message. I was just thinking about the STi the other day and thought that so far no reports of it, aybe things are getting better, at the time I was just about to post my thoughts aswell, but I thought, wait a little longer. Dam it when I logged on to see this thread.

Either way through Roy or through Beltronics driectly, I would just go ahead and get a replacement, no sence waiting for it to totaly crap out on you, you will never know when your not protected, it will be glowing as if it is on, but really it will be deadly silent with a possible trap one day ahead. I would not trust it.

Is it reasonable to mount STi between CD puch and sun-visor for stealth install if it's getting SO hot on "open air"?
