Default STI - Is "Service Required" linked to unit gettin

STI - Curious whether the "SERVICE REQUIRED" problems is strictly related to the issue with the unit getting "HOT".

I've read that Beltronics is coming out with a software update to address this issue. Does anyone know more about this?

The service message is strickly related to the poor quality of Bel/Escort RD. I am surprised there is not a class action law suit. For example lucky for me I came accross Sony CCD problem first hand just recently (heard about it before but did not know the exact details and what came of it), thank god Sony owned up to the problem and I am getting a replacement that has a real FIX (no charge including free shipping both ways). These Belsort service required messages is a big problem, their supplier for hardware SUCK! This is my opinion why Belsort current RD have issues, some are in the hot sun, some are removed each time and still have this issue. Some units are left baking in the sun with out issues. Best thing is get the extended warranty and just use that to protect yourself from issues. They have good products performance wise, but the issues are unnerving.

Well; if the BEL / ESCORT Detectors are of poor quality, and the VALENTINES have the issue "J" Problem...which brand or model detector do you recommend / prefer.

    Thanks

Well, not sure if the J issue is hardware or software, I think it is just software since it is a software feature, should be able to disable it.

Each detector has its issues but since they all have a glitch your left with the pros that make up for those glitches. V1 has many pros to compensate for its glitch... laser, arrows, support, upgradability. The Belscorts get away with their glitches with performance for the dollar, filtering, and simplicity.

The V1 does seem to be the more sound unit of the bunch. At least it do not have a ticking time bomb inside of it... "service required", thats the way I see it.

Currently I own the PASSPORT 8500 (original) and SOLO 2, which have been serving me well. I'm always looking for a better product though...or at least something new to try out.

I was fortunate enough to find a brand new VALENTINE 1.8 (w/ no POP) on E-Bay. The seller seemed very sincere in answering all my questions about the unit. He purchased directly from Valentine, and never used it. In doing my research it seems the Valentines without POP are a bit more stable in that there is no "J" issues.

I paid $320 for the Valentine (via e-bay), which seems to be the going rate for a new / excellent condition unit. If I try the Valentine and don't like it, there should be no problem re-selling it.

I'm also intrigued with the BEL STI. If the quality issues can be corrected, I will may give this detector a shot as well.

    Good find!

Is the 1.8 nonPOP the slim design? Does it have the latest giant sensor?

Yes, it is the slim design. Not sure about the sensor. I should be receiving it Monday or Tuesday (via UPS)

The newer slimmer design that VR went back to in 2001 does have the newer single giant laser sensor one front and one back as that was the big change from the older ones like mine that have six smaller laser sensors in front on the bottom 1/4" of the unit.
Ku was also added at this point.

Upgrade Recommendation: While this version is not quite up to today’s V1 standard for Ka, it’s almost always good enough, and always better than detectors from other makers. X and K performance is excellent.
Upgrading merely to improve radar performance is not cost effective, in my opinion, unless you’re concerned about the POP Mode operating in your area. Upgrading does bring other benefits, including our latest laser warning (front and rear), which outperforms the competitors by a wide margin, LEDs for band identification, and POP Protection. Also, you'll get the new Euro Mode.
