    Default Just purchased RX65----concerns

Hello everybody. I'm new to the boards here. I just purchased a Bel RX65 after driving many years without a detector. I did a lot of research on detectors before I purchased, and settled on the RX65 based on performance reviews and price. I bought mine off ebay (which from reading here tonight I see there have been horror stories). Everything appears legit with mine as it has a serial # on both the box and the unit, along with an FCC# and the box was still in the plastic wrapping when I got it.

First, my detector has a build code of 1606 and has software version 6.1. Anyway, after having driven with it for about a week and a half, I have some concerns. I'm getting false laser alerts on a daily basis. It appears to me that it happens on bright sunny days in the morning when I'm heading northbound on the interstate and the sun is at a low angle. On cloudy days, it does not go off. So is it really the sunlight setting off the laser alert? I know it's not police, because it happens daily in the bright sun (this morning while I was stopped at a red light facing the sun even) and I have not seen a cop car anywhere. I have the detector mounted low, just above the windshield wipers.

Second, the sensitivity hasn't impressed me yet, but I realize I need to drive more with it. I have already encountered a few police with it using K and Ka bands, and at the most had 10 seconds warning. I'm going on an 11-12 hour drive this weekend for vacation through several states, so I'm sure I'll find out more about this soon.

I just wanted to see what your thoughts were about the two issues I have raised above. The laser detection going off on a regular basis (1-2 times a day) is really annoying and has me wondering if everything is normal. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the Board!!!

My recommendation is to mount it high, I think most members agree with me on this. Mount it right where the tint ends, either on the side of the Rear view mirror or on the botton, as close to the center as possible (best Radar Detection).

I think because it is so sensible to laser that the direct sunlight activates the laser alarm, I think there are some threads that explains why.

I hope that you did not get a crappy RD because they are not to cheap, next time buy it from Roy www.radarbusters.com

    Good luck,

Sunlight can set off your laser alerts and electrical leaks from the car like a bad distributor cap can do this too. For the radar part , if they were using instant on ahead of you its normal to have not much alert time.

EBAY certainly was not the way to go, you got that right... but not everyone is crooked, so you may-be ok.

As for the laser falses: Even though the RX65 is (tested-as-terrible) against laser, well at least the worst of the Top 3/4, it is very possible it is the direct sunlight hitting the RD. I especially tend to think its possible seeing that you have a silver car which has in rare cases been known to cause these falses... A noisy electrical system that SpeedFreak mentioned can also cause these flases, but normally they occur irregaurdless of the weather, and occur when turning on the AC/Lights/Wipers, or even pressing the horn or hard acceleration.

As for the detections... certainly give it more time. It is very possible the LEOs were using instant-on... (like) just turning it on when they see people of intrest, this could mean they could shoot one car for 1 or 2 seconds... or a whole line of cars for 20 seconds.

With that said, if the RD warned you with ample time to slow down (especially on Ka), that is really what counts... we all have a few close calls, even with the best equipment.

Try to find a speed-sign or something else to test the range against.

Also what were the circumstances surrounding the 10 second warning, were you coming towards each other... what speed, was the 10 seconds until you saw him, or until you passed them? There are just a ton of X&Y factorts, sometimes (even with the best RD's) you will get a 0.2 mile warning one time, then 2.0mile the next.

Test it out on this trip, and see what it does for you.

With regards to the ebay purchase, you know what they say, hindsight is 20/20. But then again, if it turns out to be fine (the seller offers his own 6yr warranty), then I saved $100 from what most are paying for it. It's a chance I took (I see now), I'll find out if it bites me or not I suppose.

They definitely were not using instant on. I got a weak signal which quickly ramped up to full alert in one instance, and only about 3/4 alert in a couple others (even as they passed me). All instances except one, they were heading towards me. I do know that I need to give it more time. Which is why I'm anxious to see how it does on my trip this upcoming weekend. I figure there will be plenty of police out for the holiday weekend, and I should encounter all kinds of alerts.

I'll try mounting it higher and see what happens. My buddy has also offered to hard wire it in for me, so that's a possibility as well.

Thanks for the info everybody. I wanted to pick the brains of some more experienced users to see what your thoughts were on what I was encountering.
