Has anyone had the "Service Required" message come up when starting the car and then after a "reboot" the RD and it works fine?
That is what happened to me with my 895. My RD seems to work ok though.

This just happened today with my STI. I had it in my other car parked in the mid day sun. The hard wire connection in this car is not a switched 12 volts but is on all the time. The connection was easy and since I rarely use this car I haven't hard wired up to a switched source.
What actually happened was I forgot to turn the RD off and left it in the car with the windows rolled up in direct sunlight with the temperatures in the 90's. When I came back to the car about 2 hours later, the service required message was up on the screen and the beeper was going off. I just shut it off, started the car and put on the AC. In about 5 minutes I turned it back on and everything was fine. I suspect the box has an over temperature sensor in it's interior and if it senses over temp it assumes there is an internal fault. Probably this is almost always true since no human would be sitting in a car that was as hot as mine was today. I have actually measured the car interiors on such days and temperatures in excess of 140-150 are not uncommon if the car is in direct sunlight with the windows rolled up during mid day.
Yes, the STi's are known to flash service required when they over-heat. RadarRoy has a post about this already. All you have to do is cool it down and shut it off. It's happened to me once when I did like you did and accidently left it in the sun. The newest version has this over-heating problem corrected, but it's nothing to really worry about as long as you don't leave it out in the sun.
Be kind to your electronics and don't leave your RD in the blazing sun.
Yeah, I treat her like a baby. She always goes with me. But perhaps I did leave it in there when it was hot. Don't remember.Originally Posted by Public Enemy No 1
YES........on hot days (80 degrees or over) my STI gets this message ocassionally. If I shut it down and let it cool it always "boots up" without any problem.Originally Posted by asianfire
The bottom line this is completely unacceptable for a $450.00 RD.
I'm hestitant to get it serviced or replaced, as mine has excellent detection on K, Ka and Laser...... :?
X2. I will never buy one until problems like these are taking care of.Originally Posted by the horn13
But everyone here is talking about the STI having the service required problem. But as I recall I believe ImmuneSTI had the Service required message just as you described on his RX65.
We told him it was likely to happen again but be more severe and sure enough it crapped the bed a week or so later.
I agree, on these days especially when the temp gets to about 32 C you have to take "your baby" out of the sun. 8) 8) Paying this much $$$, you have to remember to take it down to cool off. I remember Roy did mention that if the service message does come on to shut it down, cool it off and try it again. So far remembering not to leave it in the car when I am not using it I haven't had the service message..........knock on wood :!:
I doubt leaving it in the car will cause this problem. Leaving it in the car with it on will. I leave it in my Corvette all the time with no problem, however in that car it is on a switched 12 volt source so I can't forget to turn it off.
I can tell you from design experience it is difficult to keep any electronics cool if the case is tightly sealed with no air flow across it. I actually think shutting down the RD when it senses it's internal temperature is too high is a good practice.
I don't know what it is now but the design standard for automotive electronics was 85C semiconductor junction temperatures which translates with the usual heat transfer to something like 120F or so in the car. The idea is the electronics need not work properly if no human would be driving the car at those temperatures. Modern chips have built in sensors to indicate over temp and a good design shuts off the power when one of these activates.
I was using my V1 yesterday running some errands and I left it up. By the time I took it down it was very hot. Take you rd out of the sun as much as you can.
