This takes place for the most part on highway 7 between Newmarket and Ottawa, Ontario Canada. Anyone who knows this highway knows its police are famous for lidar traps, Spectre RDDs and hidden cars with LEOs pointing handheld radar guns. It was the Canadian Thanksgiving and there was crackdown on speeders etc.
The STi was on autoscan with all the stock factory settings. It was mounted below the tint to give maximum lidar protection. We set out on Friday night on highway 9 north of Toronto. We crossed the 400 and only began to receive alerts in Newmarket, most of which were X-band falses. There was two K-falses also, one from a leaky RD in a green Sunfire, and one I assume was the hospital we drove past.
Save #1: All was quiet on the spooky, dark highway that was complete with thick banks of fog, mist and a full moon - perfect for an enterprising LEO out to catch the unsuspecting. When we hit county road 8 heading into Port Perry the STi alerted to K-band, then nothing. We couldn't spot anything so shrugged it off as another false. As we go into the town the speed limit dropped from 50mph to 30. I dropped my speed from 60 to 40 with the false of 3/4mi. earlier still in my mind, then we hit a thick bank of mist. The STi went off with a K-band warning, and there at the top of a hill was a Port Perry Police Cruiser. A new Dodge Charger. I had time to slow down. The earlier false was clearly not a false at all, it was the cop shooting traffic intermittently.
The next 200 miles were quiet. There were a couple of X-band falses, probably sattelite antennas, but nothing more. Road was quiet and I blasted along, straight through Peterborough, Norwood, Marmora, and Havelock without anything but X falses from old supermarkets. In Kaladar I got a K warning from the police station, which is just at the side of the road.
The road back was a little different. From Ottawa we set out Monday afternoon in prime time traffic. We picked out one OPP cruiser around Carleton Place, but there was almost nothing all the way along until we hit the hotbed of enforcement past Kaladar.
Save #2: I was at the head of a line of traffic doing around 65 in a 50mph zone when the STi blurted out with a brilliant sound I had never heard before. Probably the most dreaded of all too. I looked around, careful not to slam on the brakes. I disconnected the cruise and dropped my speed to 50. My car is geared so this happens fairly quickly. Up ahead, about 1/2 a mile from where I got the alert there was something white sticking out from the thick forest. Then I saw the tripod with the unmistakable Marksman 20/20 on it. The LEO was waving to another cop. There was three chase cars behind the trees. Around the bend there was two cars pulled over.
I guess the VEIL and the lasershield paid off. I can only assume that from 1/2-1/3 of a mile they couldn't get a reading on me so they didn't waive me over. I also have hiding headlights. Still trying to figure out why they had the gun aimed so far away. In any case, the STi worked fantastically by picking out the lidar hit.
The rest of the trip was breeze. No LEOs and the hills were lit up with the fire of bright fall colours. It was a great drive.
