Good range?
I had my STi today and it started alerting to Ka @35.486. I got about .4 miles warning range. The LEO was hiding between 2 buildings and in an area with a lot of false alerts. I was heading east and the LEO's radar was facing SE. Does that sound like reasonable detection range?

The Ka detection range will depend on the circumstances. If the gun was pointed directly at you without the obstruction from a building or car, the range was poor because you should get as much as 2km. However, based on you description, the building probably reduced the range of Ka. Also note that a gun that is pointed at a 45 degree angle instead of directly at you will also reduce the range.
Ka band radar is more difficult to pick up than X or K and does not have the same dispersion properties.
Other variables to consider are hills and radar guns pointed at the rear of traffic. These will also result in reduced range.
In short, 0.4 km may still be reasonable detection range.
I once got a crazy Ka range from a cruiser up on a hill around a curve on the other side of traffic. About 2 500m! :shock:
Another time around a curve I got barely 200m. But probably instant-on.
I don't see the point to a Leo using Ka band in an area full of false.
K band falses all the time, but Ka is extremly rare.
Plus on anygood detector, Ka band always superseeds K band.
Using K band around K band falses is smart, they would nab me! I have K and X band off. Never seen a Leo in Toronto using K band. Saw K band when I was around Brockville, ON, but never in the GTA.

Yes I am wondering if he just liked the location, or if he did it bec it is an area with a high number of false alarms. There are 3 X band and 1 K band false alarms in the area he was hiding. Like quandary said the LEO's gun was facing the road at a angle, which most likely further reduced the detection range, yet gave the LEO a clear view of the road. But once I saw the Ka alert in that area I KNEW there was a LEO hiding. Had it been K or X band in that spot I might have ignored the alert. Still, it was a very sneaky spot!!
I did a few test runs past him, first to locate him, then to test how the STi would do in different modes. It seems when I ran City No X it alerted just a bit sooner, vs running in Highway and then waiting for it to stop alerting to the X and alert to the Ka. However, the STi did a nice job of giving higher priority to the Ka even in Highway mode.

I'd say .4 km is pretty good considering the circumstances. Do they use eagle units?
