I haven't been shot with lidar yet, but it seems to pick up the radar bands with sufficient sensitity to avoid detection at non-warp speeds.

Default Testing

Testing the 795 last weekend, it did pretty good on laser. I picked up laser front and rear around 2500-3000ft. I thought that was ok. It also picked up k and ka band but not quite as well as the top 3. For under a $100, it did it's job.

The problem with the 795 has been quality issues, I for one have had excellent luck with mine and it detects quite well for the money.

Others here have reported that it did lousy for them and it did not alert them to actual radar alerts.

If you get lucky and get one of the "freak ones" that work well you will be happy with it.

With the quality issues I think I would look at a Whistler XTR series.

Im sorry, I know that I have said that before, but......

I hate it when ppl compare a lower end model to the top 3!!!! No where in the thread was there a question about one of the top three in comparsion to the 795. Of course the top 3 will do better, but heck like it was said, they are at least 3 to 4 times more expensive. And if you don't travel a lot or not a "big speeder" the lower end models may do a person well.

As far as instant on, no RD can save you if you aren't using other means of countermeasures (such as a rabbit) or it goes off before you get there (because he is targeting someone else)

I just had to pay $400 to get out of a 20 over ticket. I was being stupid and travelling on the road with noone in sight. I saw him a half a second before he hit me with instant on. I was able to only slow down about 2 mph. So if you are being stupid (like I was), no RD is going to absolutely ensure a "no ticket" suituation.

I was in Texas over Christmas weekend and, due to the big storm in Denver, had to fly into Dallas and rent a car to drive to Austin. Took my 795 along, cruised Rt. 35 at about 80-90 between Dallas-Austin and it picked up three state troopers running radar, one of which was on a side road paralelling the highway, not shooting traffic, but at least I knew he was there.

My 795 continues to pick up K and Ka from at least 1/2 mile away, and even gives good alerts when cops are hiding on the other side of a small hill. The one time I've seen a trooper using lidar, I got no alert, but there was heavy traffic, and I don't think I was targeted by the cop. It was near sunset, and I could see the laser light up as the cop was shooting somebody from the seat of his cruiser, perpendicular to oncoming traffic.

I've definitely avoided at least two tickets due to my cheapo RD!

Default 795

I use three of these in my cars. They all seem to deliver about the same in performance. I also use The V940 in my work truck and would give it the edge in over all performance but the 795 is not at all bad for the money.

Yea, I think the problem is that people do compare it alot to the higher end models. I have never used the 795, but I do have some sort of experience with lower end models. I have an X50, but I have bought(for my family) and driven with(on "test" runs) a Whistler Pro-58 and V965. If you compare them to the X50, they don't really compare. But they do a very good job, nonetheless. They will give you enough time to slow down, especially if it is constant on.

Also, another problem people have is getting lower end units, and expecting high end performance. You should get a detector that suits your needs. If you only do 5-10 mph over speed limit, you will probably be able to get away with a lower end detector like a 795. Other people, be it because they may be a bit more lead footed, or simply because they can afford to get the best, get those high end units.

As a side note, if you guys who are looking for a budget detector, look at the V955. It did very well for the amount of money it cost.

I think the Bel 795 would be good for a City detector... but for highway you would want something with more range.
