I've been driving around Toronto and surrounding areas with a concealed STi (A1M7, X=off, K=on, Ka=on) for a few weeks now. Here are a few things I had to get off my back — perhaps other GTA users can chime in?
I've found, as with a lot of you, virtually ZERO Ka in the GTA. In the past few weeks, I can count the number of Ka alerts I've had on one hand.
** Ka #1: Lakeshore westbound, around Fort York. STi starts going with a Ka alert. As I pass through the Princes' Gates where the limit dives to 30km/h (!!!) there's a fully marked Toronto cruiser sitting in front of the Automotive Building, facing eastbound, running constant-on Ka. MPH front/rear antennas, 33.769 or something like that.
** Ka #2: Sitting in a Tim Hortons parking lot. Ka alert getting hotter and hotter. White, unmarked Toronto slick-top pulls into the lot and parks right beside me. I subtly hit the kill switch to shut the STi up. A shame it wasn't an OPP for a real Spectre test.
And that's about it. Not much falsing. A million K alerts in the suburbs from all the door openers at Shoppers Drug Marts, Loblaws, Home Depots, etc.
My biggest disappointment is that I've had at least two dozen encounters with nary an alert to be heard. Most were just cruising around the city (several York in town, Peel in town, York on 407, Peel on 401, Toronto in town, Toronto on DVP).
I nearly flew by two York Region cruisers on the 407 one morning doing more than double the speed limit. (I was stretching my legs on a long, empty off ramp.) No alerts, just me standing on the brakes at the very last minute to slow short of passing them.
I've heard someone say that yes, the STi is a good radar detector, but it's no cop detector. I guess I was hoping for more police to be running around with constant-on.
Is this consistent with what you're finding? Lots of cops, not a lot of radar?
