Default leo using a hand held ka radar gun

Hi everybody, today as i was going home from school, my rd went to ka 1 and then i look on right side, the leo was pointing a hand held radar gun and clocking people, it this what you guys call an instant on. Beacause my rx65 alerted after i passed the leo.

It's only "Instant on" when the LEO triggers the radar gun once really fast.

If that happened, you would get a full burst of radar on you which would make your detector show a full bar alert.

Actually, instant-on is anytime the LEO keeps the gun in standby and only shoots when (s)he wants to clock someone's speed. IO refers to the fact that the gun can activate "instantly" to clock someone's speed with little/no warning.

"Once really fast" is the most difficult instant-on to detect/react to, but even if the LEO waits until (s)he sees your car and then turns the radar on and keeps it on, it's still instant-on, since the gun was on standby before you came along.

Also, handheld guns are almost always used in instant-on mode, especially if they're operating on battery power, to maximize battery life.

Just the other day I got tagged with K band IO with NO prior warning. I knew LEOs were out and I was about the only car on the road at the time. The whole encounter was over in about 3-4 seconds!! This is why you want long range detection, so if they are using IO you hope you can detect it before you come into range.

That's the problem... if you're the only car on the road, long range detection is useless against instant-on. You need long-range detection AND rabbit(s), to get the LEO to trigger their radar before you're in range.

IO + only car on the road + speeding = BUSTED.

About 2 weeks earlier while traveling on this same road I detected a short burst of K IO. At the time I was the only car on the road, within my visual range. A few seconds pass and I get another short burst alert. These weren't full power hits, they were only 2 to 3 on my signal meter in strength.

Then I started seeing some car lights about 3 miles down the road from my location. I got one more short alert that was about 4 to 5 on the signal meter. At that point I knew it had to be IO being used. Sure enough I spot a LEO traveling in the opposite direction. As soon as he was about 400m from me he tagged me with IO. I took a FULL blast of it!

So, in this case, had I not had really good detection range I would have been nailed for sure! I do agree with you that if you are the only car on the road, and get hit with IO, it is game over if you are speeding. But, I do feel that long range detection is critical if you face a lot of IO. Only car on the road or not!

But, in your case, you weren't the only car on the road. If you were, there would have been no alerts until it was too late... Even a car a couple miles away can serve as a rabbit if you have a good detector and good terrain.
