Default Saw this post in a Y! Group, Is it true?

I've had a RX65 for a couple of months and traveled from NC to OH and
back on a couple of quick trips. It seemed to do a great job. But,
then it started coming up with a message "Service Required." I called
up Bel and sent it back. They repaired it (plus they sent a new smart
cord and window mount). I called and asked if there was something that
I did to damage it and was told that if I left it turned on when I cut
off my car engine (which cuts off the plug), it will damage the
antenna. So now I have to remember to turn off the unit before I turn
off my engine. Any others have this experience?

Power issues can definitely cause Self Cal or Service Required. From Escort, but its the same thing:
It is good to hear from you! There are a number of things that may cause this ERROR message. Please be sure that you are getting consistent voltage (does the lighter socket stay ON all the time? Does it do the same thing in other vehicles?). If the Passport 8500 or the Passport X50 has shown a display that reads "Service Required" not caused by the above, it means it has failed it's self-calibration and requires service. I would strongly suggest you call our Customer Service Department and they will give you a repair authorization number and instructions on how to return it to us so we can take a look at your Passport. The out of warranty repair fee is $79.95. A ninety day warranty comes with the repair.
Thanks for your interest in Escort!

Not the physical horn, but maybe the circuitry.

Guess, I should turn off the V1 and then turn it on once the car has started. Same goes for the Parking Sensor.

Turning OFF the car will NOT harm the detector in any way. Whomever told you that was WRONG, period.

I have spoken to Bel regarding this issue and they assured me that there was absolutely nothing wrong with leaving your detector on while cutting the car off or starting it with the detector on. Sounds like they are giving contradictory information. Personally, I always have my RX65 powered down before turning my vehicle off or on as I do not trust Bel regarding their self cal and service required messages. I personally think the issues regarding the Belscorts were related to a combinanation of heat and starting the car with the detector on. I have always practiced these methods and have not received a message yet (fingers crossed). I practice this with the V1 as well. Even though V1 says its ok to start the car with the V1 powered on. Upon starting a car I believe voltages are all over the place so I think this is good practice.

any electrical gurus know how to make a power on delay. I tried to find a circuit diagram on the net but couldn't find any that were suitable for this problem.

A 3-5 second delay would be great. Even if starting doesn't hurt the RD it is annoying.

Such a good point. I know when the x50 is in Voltage mode. Engine off the voltage can be around 11.4-12 volts. However once you try to start the engine it can drop severely then all of a sudden once the alternator charges it can get up to 14 volts.
