So we took a trip to Sandusky today (North from Columbus on 23 to 4 and 98 ending on Rt 2 basically into town). Ive done this trip at least a dozen times before, and have NEVER seen a LEO, or if I have its been once or twice over the course of the dozen trips, so bringing my Bel 955 almost seemed an exercise in futility, but I brought it anyway. We took the Wife's car, so we took down the LRD937 and popped the Bel on the windshield and headed out. The first thing I didn't realize is the difference between this, and all my other trips... this was a holiday weekend.
Once off the outer belt on 270 and on 23, about 15 - 20 miles out they have an area of "Test Pavement". I was cruising on that stretch at 8 or 9 over and started gaining on a minivan that was quite close to the PSL, when a 2 bar X popped on, and disappeared, I wrote it off as a false (all X falses from shopping plazas or whatnot are 2 bars on this detector). As I was pressing the accelerator and reaching for the blinker to go around the van I got another X... three bars this time, it was just enough out of the ordinary to get me to back off and stay behind the van. We cruised for another 2 or 3 tenths of a mile and then another instant reading, this time 5 bars, not even a tenth of a mile later a state highway patrol car is parked on the inside test pavement, I got no reading as I went past him (does X have a IO flavor? Because it seemed like it with those on-off readings). Saw 2 more coming to join his buddy a few more clicks up the road, probably returning from customers.
That I considered a save. I was going just fast enough where they could have nailed me if they wanted to. Also interesting to know Ohio SHP uses X still, and boy is that true today.
The rest of the way was fairly smooth, saw another LEO running X hitting people coming out of a 55mph zone heading into a town at 35mph, didnt pick anything up, he was behind a railroad rise, but a sixth sense told me there was something there, and while it didnt matter because we were legal anyway because of the railroad tracks, there he was on the other side (whole car was blocked from actual line of sight as we approached, maybe why we got nothing at all), then he pulled a U-turn right in front of me and as he drove passed me the Bel lit up like a christmas tree on the X. Then another set of X readings started coming up a little further on from there, was getting a 4 bar when we saw a dude driving this way flashing his high beams at people, another tenth of a mile and the LEO drove past us on the other side, so I estimated our first reading at a hair over 2 miles away if the LEO was traveling at about the same speed we were.
The second save came very near the end of the trip there, it was on Rt. 2, very near Sandusky, last stretch of highway youre on before getting into town, there is a relatively high hill, prolly a good half mile from one low, to the other low (the crest then being at a quarter mile). Was moving along at a good clip, going up the hill, accelerating steadily and got a 6 bar K reading, then falling off to nothing, of course no LEO in sight, but slowed to PSL and moved over, crested the hill, and there he was at the bottom of the hill, shooting up at it. I was like wow, over the hill sexiness.
Trip home wasn't nearly as eventful, but still worth a quick rundown, had another oncoming X band reading, another LEO going the opposite way. Ways after that I was in a 35 zone as a LEO rolled to an intersection. I had gotten no warning so he wasn't running anything at the time, he pulled out behind us as we passed him, and less then 30 seconds after he did he blasted me in the rear with K. Then it went silent, as a car approached in the oncoming lane, the Bel went Christmas tree again on K, and again at another oncoming car... then he turned off onto a side street and was gone.
The last encounter was a weak 2 - 3 bar K band in a town, I wasn't speeding and it grew to a 4 bar as we slowed to a stoplight. Then two cruisers went passed us on the cross street right in front, the alert went away, and that was the last of the fun for the evening.
All in all a very entertaining day I must say. Had to tell you guys about my day and my first 2 saves. Bel just paid for itself. 8)
