Default Difference between new 995 and old one

Hi. I'm not too saavy about radars, but am looking at purchasing my first. What is the difference between the older version of the 995 and the new one? The top looks different and I have seen both on-line when i have been shopping around for about the same price. The units on the Beltronics site have the "995" in big letters across the top and I assume the older one is the one with the smaller "995" on the right side. Your feedback would be greatly apprecaiated as I'm purchasing soon for a roadtrip.

    Thanks in advance

I know I'm just a newcommer, but have learned a lot on this site today. I just have a basic question between the two 995 models and would greatly appreciate your help.

As far as i know there is nothing different about the older ones to the newer ones. The buttons and features are the same, the only thing that changed was the Horn. My limited knowledge of the two horns are that they are for the most part exactly the same, one jsut being, from what I understand, cheaper to mass produce. One is the S7 Horn, the older one, and M4 being the newer one, the FCC ID will tell you which is in the unit, but the appearance of the unit has no bearing on it, however i would say the older "looking" ones have a better chance of getting the S7 horn, which is SAID by alot of people to be the better horn, even thuough theres no ACTUAL proof of this anywhere. If anyone knows otherwise, please help us out. 8)

Thanks for the reply. When comparing specs, they both seem to have the same features and Circuit City is still selling what I think is the older one with the 995 written in smaller letters on the right side.

The older 995 was slightly different in case color and I believe had interchangable top bezels with a fake carbon fiber type print. If you see what seems to be an older 995 on a website, it is an old pic and you will most likely get a new model. Also, a few years ago when the 995 came out it did not have the Smartcord standard.

So, can someone tell me which one is the new one. I mean, what does the cover look like? Is it the one with the big numbers on it across the top? Or the one that says Vector 995?

    Thanks

The new ones don't have "VECTOR" written across the top of them. Instead it just says "V995". Oh yeah, if you go looking for one at a Circuit City or similar electronics store, be sure to look at the bottom of the box for the FCC ID number. It is in small print along with "THIS DEVICE COMPLIES WITH PART 15...". Look for a FCC ID of QL4G1S7 if you can find one. G1S7 has the S7 radar horn which is slightly better on Ka band.

Some here say that the S7 platform isn't as reliable, but if you keep it out of extreme heat or extreme cold then you shouldn't have any problems. I use my S7 V995 almost every day, but I never leave it in the sun when I park my car. Its Ka performance is extremely good.

The M4 horn (FCC ID QL4G7M4) performs nearly as well on Ka, and several forum members say that its laser performance is better. The M4 platform supposedly is more reliable as well.

I've had both the S7 and M4 platforms, and both have had no problems. But then again, I don't leave my radar detectors frying in the sunlight when I park my car!

    Best Regards,

    --Michael
