been away for a while, help me out
I was addicted to this forum for several months before making a career change that involved a move to Newark, NJ and no more need for a vehicle, so along with my car I sold my RX 65 and attempted to sell my AL G8 (which is still sitting in my closet). I am now back in Houston, TX and driving again, and wanting a radar detector. My problem is this. I have been away for over a year. I have absolutely no idea the improvements made in the last year. The last I remember, I hated the v1 because of the constant falses, and weak real life detection compared to the x50 and the rx65; got rid of the x50 because despite stellar detection, I couldn't stand it rattling against my windshield; and fell in love with the RX65. It had stellar detection (I got killer long range, around the corner, overhill, etc, detection, even great detection w/ IO), and fit perfectly against my windshield. Reading this forum, I find little talk of the RX65, but mostly stuff regarding the vector series. Is the RX65 no longer the stellar detector it was a year ago? What about the escort models... the new 9500i? Worth the extra money for a few fancy gadgets? I've been reading this forum all day long... but what I really want is a quick rundown on how things are TODAY as opposed to a year ago... can anyone help?
well, after reading the 8/07 GOL tests more closely, it does appear the RX65 is blown out of the water by the new 9500i and V1.

I liked the X50...it's a good unit for the money. But, it's gray plastic and looks dorky....seems like it's a foot long compared to my V1. I sold the X50 to buy the STI.......STI was on sale.
I like my V1....SOB is currently dead on K band tho so gotta send it in...and it's just uhhh...I don't know...boring.
I like my STI...I really like my STI...I really really like my STI. If you liked your RX65 you should love the STI.
I hear lots of good things about the 9500....at least it's black plastic...still kinda long tho...probably the quietest unit out there from what I have studied...I have never used one myself but read a lot about em...I chose the STI over the 9500 because of the stealth feature...it may just be the 9500 is slightly ahead of it's time...might take another look at it in a year or two
Just some rambling opinions man....
In the last round of Guys O' Lidar, seems the vectors are performing as well or better than the Rx 65, and the higher end of the vector series seems to have all the other nice features of the 65, too.
There have been a lot of complaints on the board about Rx 65s having to go back for servicing. I've got 2 of these detectors, and one had to go back. Customer service, I really have to report, was outstanding.
All the glory seems to have shifted to the STi.
It seems to be a good bit better than the 65, plus Spectre-detector prooof for those of us travelling to Virginia.
Valentine seems to be the overall champ, I kinda hate to say it. I wonder if I shoulda bought one of those. It would be awfully good to know where the signal is coming from when I get an alert, and it's not immediately obvious.
Hey, I thought the V1 had some fancy programming features to minimize the racket from false alarms....
As for false alarms on the Rx 65, there's no X and K band in these parts, except for out on the highway, once in a while. That's eliminated every last false alarm, save for 2 or 3, in the last 6, 7, or 8 months for me.
