Default Ohio State Highway Patrol - New technique or New Radar?

I commute from Columbus to Wilmington on I-71 everyday and more times than not, I see mobile OSHP and Sheriffs but no indication on my STi. I wonder if they've stopped broadcasting Ka in lieu of a more targeted scanning technique. POP perhaps?

I know my Sti is operational since once off the interstate, I pick up Ka from Sheriffs when they're turned on and x or k band from long range (2miles +). One save in particular I can attribute to its stealth capabilities as I was behind a dump truck and the Sheriff stopped transmitting after he got the truck then suddenly turned his unit back on as he didn't see me.

Any idea what's going on folks? New Ka band in use? New technique? I recently purchased my Sti and it has the 33.8 modification and I think the newest firmware upgrade. Date on the unit was 10/08.

Should I keep my unit set on autoscan or go for the highway setting?

Any info would be greatly appreciated as this is my first time here.

    Regards!!

I am not a big fan of autoscan, though it is better on the newer BELs. For highway driving I would use highway mode.

They are probably using I/O and being more selective when they target vehicles. Also be on the lookout for laser.

Thank for the quick response GTO.

    BTW, what is I/O? (input/output?)

IO = Instant On. As in the old Revolutionary War tactic - "don't fire till you see the whites of their eyes". If they're selective enough you won't get an alert until POW! Or in your case, they aren't shooting at all while you're in range.

Laser is a good possibility too, much harder to detect, but (usually) easier to spot visually. You can see them aiming the gun via a scope/HUD on top of the gun.

They could be just watching traffic, catching up on paperwork/doughnuts, or something else too.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

OSHP uses a ton of laser. That's my guess. If it's daytime and they can see that you are not blatantly speeding, you probably weren't targeted. Were the LEOs parked parallel or perpindicular to the road. If it was perpindicular, then I am even more inclined to think it was laser.

OSHP uses laser and X band when driving.

    At least near Cincinnati.

I drive the turnpike on a regular basis. I agree with everything above. Don't expect them to activate their gun's until they are targeting a vehicle. It's eerily quiet in Ohio.

Ive been hit with IO X band on I75 near Findlay and as stated they use a ton of Lidar!!

Ohio Highway Patrol are well trained and determined. If your going to go over PSL in Ohio, you'd best do it smartly and pay strict attention to your surroundings at all times. A heightened sense of awareness is critical or your odds go down the toilet quickly.

Ohio is known by truckers as a no no for speeding. Especially when its 55mph for us truckers. I use the CB adjusted squelch backed all the way off for max range with the STI, and ask for a smokey reports quite often. I agree with laser being used alot especially on the toll roads and instant on being used exclusively. Very seldon do I encounter OHP running constant on.

What kind of questions you're using not to make yourself too aggressive to the fellow truckers? I know that 'wide open' stands for no smokey around but how do you include it in a fair and simple question?
    TIA

We have Trucker lingo .. example if your heading west you ask something like this. "how bout it east bound u got a copy?" reply "you got an east bound", "hows it look over your shoulder?" their reply will be the mile markers they last saw LEO's. Never ask for a trucker by the name of their company, probably wont answer, dont want the LEOS hearing them on the air giving any LEO reports. Just be general like above. Look for a group of trucks going the other way so you are close and they will hear you well before asking, also helps alot. We do not mind answering 4wheelers, we are all about keeping the LEO's out of our wallets. Its a daily cat and mouse game with us and the LEO's same as you guys in the 4wheelers, but we are easy targets, since they know we normally dont have an option to fight it in court( since we will be on the other side of the country when the court date comes up) and they know we have to pay or lose our license... Fines are higher for commercial license holders also.
