Default RX65 Constant Laser Falses: mitigate or disable laser?

    G'Day Experts!

My new BEL RX65 gives constant laser falses, when I'm driving into the general direction of the Sun, especially mornings and early evenings. When there's snow on the ground (as there is for at least five months here in Vermont), it's worse, as reflected sunlight sets off laser warnings. I keep hitting the _mute_ button, then a few seconds later, it comes back.

This past January I got nailed by real radar because I couldn't pick it out from the laser falses, and heed the warning. Is there a way to temporarily disable the Laser warnings? Use an infrared filter from the Edmonds catalog? Did I buy the wrong detector? Would another give me the feature that I need?

    Cheers!
    Rob

I think you have a defective unit. I have an RX65 and it *never* falses on laser. Ditto for my X50. The V1 falses laser from things like Infinitis and certain neon signs but that's due to V1's insane sensitivity to laser.

Send it out to Bel and have them check it over. Sunlight shouldn't cause laser falses, except in some extreme circumstances.

First off, I've responded to your other post in the General Section...

YES, you have a DEFECTIVE unit!!! Try your best to return it and exchange it for free with another one, a good one!!!

I live in Toronto, you know, snow and bright sunshine, and my STI never ever reacted negatively to bright sunshine or any other natural or artificial cause, so far (since Sept '06) I've got just 2 or 3 false laser alerts, 2 of them being down in the States around some local airports, Buffalo and Cincinnati if I can recall exactly...

Again, you MUST get rid of this unit and get a GOOD one!!!

Where did you buy it from?

Are they made in China or something? Just returned a baby seat to Recaro... they used to make great quality seats, now they are awful, since they outsourced their manufacturing to China.

    Thanks!

BEL and Escort RDs are actually made in Canada. You just got a dud, send it back and get another one.

Canada, just west of Toronto... no big deal (in a way of course), sometimes they make bad units and you've been picked up to "represent" their one-of-a-kind failure of course it cost you a ticket, what can you do... PM Roy, tell him about your unique case, just copy this thread and the other one in the General section and ask him to try speeding up the exchange... nothing else, nothing more you can do... also, for the bad device you got and the pain in the pocket due to the traffic ticket they should throw you something for free, some accessories for your RD that you don't have now, that's all about customer service... best of luck

Like the others said, it is very unusual for a BEL to false on laser, especially the newer ones. You either have a defective unit or you have excessive noise in your vehicle's electrical system which can cause laser falses.

I used to get quite a few false laser alerts from sunshine when the sun was low on the horizon and I was driving into it. I recall one or two unpleasant drives into work where it was falsing every few hundred feet. I turned it off more than once.

Because the RX 65 isn't as good at picking up a laser shot as some others (e.g., V1), I moved it lower on the windshield, so it just peaks over the wipers. I've noticed no false lasers from sunshine ever since. (red neon signs are a different matter!). In the position the detector is in now, it can't "see" reflected sunlight off the hood.

If you haven't sent it back yet, you might consider a "reset", and then try mounting it low down, and see what you get.

mine has never falsed with a laser warning before... weird.

just turn off your laser detection then.

My Beltronics RX65 radar detector also provides false laser warnings whenever I drive into the sun so during commute hours it is worthless much of the time.

Anyone know where the laser sensor is so I can put a piece of black electrical tape over it? I would like to continue to try to use the unit though its Ka sensitivity, critical in California with the highway patrol, is mediocre.

Probably just need to go back to moving the Valentine from car to car and see if I can get anything for the Beltronics on Craigslist. Definitely would never buy anything but a Valentine in the future.
