It was 3 years ago I joined these forums, and after many reviews I decided on the RX-65. Yesterday, I shipped her off to a new buyer as I currently await my new V1. However, I felt the need to toast to it as it has saved me more times than I can count, and has never once gotten me a speeding ticket in my 3 years of ownership.
I purchased a 2nd unit for my wife’s car roughly 6 months later, as she was in awe of the great range and sensitivity it produced.
We both owned Rev. 4.5; hands down her detector was more sensitive than mine. Not by much, but I’d say on average, hers would alert 100-150ft earlier than mine on all bands. I had chalked this up to manufacturer variance.
My best documented alert was exactly 1.6 miles out at a Y axis road, the LEO was facing straight as I was coming off axis and picked him around curves and hills, was awesome.
The first 2 years I left it on INTL mode. Believe it or not, it still had more than enough sensitivity to keep me out of speeding tickets, although, I’d have to say USA mode definitely gives you a bit more time to respond, however, it also seems to alert to other radar detectors a lot more as a Ka band.
I have kept X band off for a few years, and turned it back on as I actually came across a LEO here in upstate NY still using X band, so I figured why chance it.
The detection has been great; all passengers in my car usually comment on how well the unit works and always beeps for a bit before they see the LEO. We generally play games to see who can spot the cop first. It’s the times when it’s on a Ka 6 or higher alert and I still can’t find where he is hiding that you truly realize how priceless this unit is.
It’s quietness at times is startling. Especially on Auto mode. My wife and I both left a Cobra model which seemed to beep at anything but LEO’s. At first we were a little nervous it wasn’t working, but those fears were soon to put aside as it always allowed us more than ample time to safely slow down for “emergency vehicles”
I think a part of me will miss it. I drove today without any RD in my car, and I felt sick to my stomach at how uncomfortable I felt driving without it. It was like nervousness you would feel standing naked in front of your entire high school class.
You really get a lot more confident driving around with the RX-65 (or any decent RD for that matter).
The 2 times I’ve been hit with laser in the past 3 years, it successfully detected both. So that’s a plus in my book. Thankfully I wasn’t speeding for either account.
My wife’s experience has been just as great. Countless trips to New Jersey and back to NY along routes 287/17/87 has yielded her 0 tickets and countless saves. She loves to drive a minimum of 80 on these roads. Especially in this area where just in the past month, 2 of our friends were pulled over doing 73 and 78 on route 84. Neither of them own a RD, yet with the money they’ll pay in fines and insurance premiums they could have just as easily bought one of these.
I always try to convince them, yet they never spring for it. One of my good friends has gotten 5 speeding tickets in the past 2 years and STILL refuses to purchase one and I drive way more aggressive than he does.
Anyway, I’m getting off track here.
To the RX-65,
A toast to a great “friend” whose saved my a$$ more times and ways that I can remember, who always started up faithfully in hot and cold weather, who survived many a falls from failing suction cups and still keeps detecting.
Bel, you’ve done a great job, keep it up.
