    Default 940: Hot=Service Required, Cool=Runs Normally

I live in Florida and it gets pretty hot inside the windshield. Today, I started the car and my new 940 displayed "self cal" and then "service required". Finally, it quit completely.

I held it in front of the A/C vent to cool it down for a few minutes. I plugged it in and it's been running normally since.

Anyone else see this in their 900 series units?

The factory says there's no actual over-temp circuit built into any of their detectors so I don't know whether to send it in for service or keep using it 'til it quits.

    Thanks for your insight... :?:

Just monitor it for a few weeks to see if it happens again.

Don't leave any RD baking in the sun when you park your car. Over temp will throw Self Cal and Service Required messages since, due to the heat, the voltages can't be correctly adjusted during the RD's self calibration process. If you don't get any Self Cal error messages when the RD is cool then everything is fine. CC sells a LowPro Ridge 30 camera case which just happens to fit the Vectors absolutely perfectly. That way you can put your V940 in the case and toss it in the glove box or stow it under your car seat.

Never leave it baking in the sun. Even if it doesn't throw a Service Required message, range seems to be reduced. Having left my RD in light/moderate heat for just 2 hours, it experienced around 20% loss in range. Remember, cool temps are an electronic gadgets best friend.

I had bels for years and never kept them in the sun unless using them, never had a problem.

Thanks all. I rigged up a detector "glove" for it like Mem-Tek suggested.

i just pull mine when i park and stick it under my seat, its the coolest place in the car being the lowest &in the shade. I keep the suction cups mounted so i dont have to realign everytime

in the winter, i take it inside with me at night so it isnt subjected to extreme heat cycles of going from freezing to the hottness of the defroster.

Same thing was happening with my 995. Had to send it in to get the antenna fixed.
