STI False Laser reading

I was backing out of a parking spot at a strip mall, & my Laser went bananas.

The only thing I could see was a red neon sign, can that make it go off?

Couldn't find a LEO anywhere.

Is my sti defective?

It's not defective. Other possible causes may have been a Trailblazer in front, whose taillights are known to cause false laser alerts, or possibly there may have been a car with laser guidance systems. Most notable on this forum are Infinitis; when some of us get a laser alert we look for Infinitis instead of LEOs.

Red neon signs which are going bad but not visibly flickering yet can set off laser alerts on just about any RD. I have encountered this a few times myself.

I've been able to false my STi's Laser detector on demand by holding it in front of my iDrive screen (Bimmer). It also goes off on occasion when entering or exiting the 407 toll highway under their gantry (the whole highway has an EZ Pass-style system).

Haven't tried yet, but I'm sure the newer high-tech parking lots (like at the GTAA/Pearson Airport) which tells you where there's an open parking spot is also laser-dependant.

The detector is doing its job; but that doesn't necessarily mean there's a traffic cop doing theirs.

yea some toll booths set of false laser alerts..i had found them to be in maine and NH..also some electronic signs above a road set of laser

I've never had any issues with false laser on my STI, including all toll booths on NYS Thruway (I90) or any other toll booth, the ones at some gorgeous toll bridges like the Mackinaw Bridge at Upper MI Peninsula, or Chesapeake Bridge and Bay, VA, or that bridge off Tampa (I75) or that bridge east of DC to get to DE, east of Annapolis, or GW Bridge to get into NYC, or Golden Bridge in SF, also never around Toronto's Pearson Airport... I guess I'm pretty damn lucky with my STI
