Hi everyone,
Late Sunday afternoon I headed down to visit my brother and my dad since the following day was my brother's birthday, yet we planned on going out for a grand dinner on that Sunday evening. There is a 10 mile stretch of I-75 which I have to get on during my commute from home to where my dad and brother live. I am cruising along at around 73mph (PSL of 70) when my STi starts alerting to Ka band. I tapped my brakes and slowed down, yet a SUV with Michigan plates blows by me easily doing 85 to 90. I was talking on my cell phone, so I didn't want to get further distracted with trying to put my STi in tech mode to see what Ka frequency I was detecting, but nevertheless I did pay attention to my odometer. Nearly a mile passed before I actually passed the GSP who was parked in the median with his car angled roughly 15 degrees such that his forward facing Ka gun was shooting oncoming traffic. Thus I was detecting angled and forward facing Ka band radar from nearly a mile away! I was impressed.
What was far more impressive, before I passed the GSP car, was that the GSP officer was outside of his vehicle and also shooting laser in my general direction. I had two really good laser hits with my STi due to laser scatter. Remember the SUV with MI plates? He was following a rabbit (not using a RD) who spotted the GSP car and apparently slowed down enough. The rabbit was laser target #1 and was shot from roughly 1000ft from the GSP officer. Likewise the speeding SUV with MI plates managed to slow down just enough before being hit as laser target #2. He too was roughly 1000ft from the GSP officer. I was around 1000 feet behind the SUV with MI plates when the MI car was shot with laser. Yet I had these two really nice laser alerts on my STi due to laser scatter from those two vehicles ahead of me.
After passing the GSP car, my STi continuously detected his forward facing Ka radar (angled roughly 15 degrees across the road for oncoming traffic) for another 2 miles. My STi then intermittently detected the GSP's Ka gun for another 1/2 mile further after that.
Well, there is (so far) my one and only dual radar and laser encounter which I have detected with any of my radar detectors. I thought that this might be an interesting experience to share with everyone -- especially for those who say that the STi sucks at detecting laser.
