Default **Video** Beltronics STi detecting Edmonton Police Service Photo Radar Van

Last night we ran into this white Edmonton Police Service Ford Winstar van (licence plate CUE 819) shooting K band 24.1 Ghz northbound on Castledowns Road (most likely using the older Multanova 6F or Gatso 24 radar). The Bel STi detected it from about 700 meters (2300 feet) away as we approached it head on, and it gave us plenty of time to slow down before we drove by it from behind.

Notice the low power signal photo radar runs on; the detector barely registered 1 or 2 bars. This is why a sensitive detector is important for photo radar.

No donut money for EPS tonight

Edit: Crap double post, I thought the one in countermeasures didn't go through

it seems like because the stregnth of the radar is so week thats why it doesnt ramp up all the way..like when you drive by a cvs the STi will alert to K band or w/e but its not goin all the way..only the van is real lol

Like I said, photo radar uses a very low powered beam directed across the road. On our city police website, they say:

"Radar detectors are comparatively ineffective against Photo Radar because of the way in which the radar signal is directed across the road."
    Photo Radar

Yeah....ineffective if you have a Cobra! The STi did do max detection as we drove by facing the van. Listen to the STi around 1:06 to 1:14 after my buddy says "You son of a *****!"

Anthrax: Ya that was a friggen dirty spot. I think Doc said it best:

I should have got a good RD years ago, cause I was being bled to the tune of 1 to 4 photo radar tix every year.

But it was a regular speeding ticket that pushed me over the edge.

Photo radar is harder to detect, but I haven't had a ticket in 2 years since getting my RD. Neither has my partner, except when I had to send in her RD for servicing. 3 tickets. Photo radar, all of them.

I always have enough warning to slow down.

Be sure to get a good one. Your detector will pay for itself.

I'm thinking I should also clean my windshield. Maybe the detection would be better that way too lol

Sorry My V1 has max alert while driving by the vans. I understand the 22.5 angle the low power out put etc. Just thinking of the old V1 staying. "when your V1 has max alert thats about the time the cop has got a reading."But hey Im talking V1 not a bell

Must be nice having that STI out in plain view. I was out in Calgary last November. I dunno if I'd rather have legal RD's or no photo radar like we have in Ontario.

Interesting VID though. I never get to see the display of my STI.
