I just purchased a Bel 955 RD last week. I've been traveling both on the highway and in the city here in Minnesota. It does go off occasionally but usually is a false alarm or no cops that I noted to be around. I have however come across 3 cops where it hasn't picked them up at all even while I passed them or was near.
Is this normal? I'm on the verge of returning it. I had better sensitivity with my junky 1st RD my Cobra 12 band from Target... lol and that was 1/2 the price of this one.

The LEO's probably just didn't have their radar units on. If they had, believe me, the 955 would have alerted you. The fact that the RD is alerting to falses in itself is proof that it is working. I suppose it's possible the RD could be defective on the band your local LEO's are using, but still work on the band the falses are on. I'd strongly suggest you wait it out a while longer and see what you get. Your Cobra 12 band isn't a pimple on the 955's rear end if you get what I mean.

Radar detectors(RDs) do just that, they detect radar. Your Bel v955 is an excellent RD, but it is not a cop detector. Most LEOs aren't running radar at all. Some LEO vehicles are not even equiped with radar equipment at all. Other LEOs use laser instead of radar, in which case, this is very hard to detect unless you are the target, and completely impossible to detect if the LEO is not actively targeting vehicles.

There is no comparison between a Cobra and Bel. By the way did you buy it new and from an authorized dealer? I say give it time, and when you get a real alert close to a mile away you will be a believer.

And when you get a 4 mile alert, your shorts might get moist.
Yeah I bought it new... Okay the reviews sound good in the thread. I just have yet to see it in action and it's been a week. I past a cop just sitting there on the side of the road yesterday and it didn't even go off. I really want to like it, but have yet been impressed with it.
You'll learn. I live in much less fear of cops now that I have a good detector. I'd say only about 20% (or less) of those I encounter are running radar.
Not every encounter is the same. Yesterday I got a 3.8 mile warning on K-band as I approached a county sheriff parked on the side of the road shooting traffic. I don't get this range on every encounter, but the conditions were great for this one: straight nearly flat road out of the city with almost no traffic.
I just went on a 1200 mile vacation. Only went off once and it was a cop. Here in town I pick them up from very long distances away with my 895 which is a 955.
