Guys,

Did anyone ever consider hooking up an oscilloscope to the signal lines leading to the various modules (i.e. display units, radar receiver units, laser shifter heads, etc.)? That little Atmel microcontroller inside the display boxes unboubtedly translates some sort of serial protocol, similar to the one used by the ZR-3 laser shifters to talk to the Belscort detector units, into actual characters on the display.

I'd offer to look into this myself, but a) I don't own any Belscort equipment, and b) I don't own an oscilloscope, either.

Okay, i just took some things apart to do this.
i also did some vids which i'll work on.
Anyway, here's the details of why the displays aren't compatible:

First, neither display will show the initial startup that identifies the detector. No biggie.

STi-r display in 9500ci box:

cycles the settings up to a point, but then on the last setting, for example i have no rear shifter connected, so it displays "Rear laser N/A" or something to that effect.
From there it would normally go to the display of what you have it set to, for example"Highway". it does not do this, it stays at the last screen of the startup sequence.
However, when i hit it with k band, it did show and sound the k band alert (std display mode), BUT, it then stays stuck on K _
If I hit it with Laser, it stays stuck displaying LASER after the alert, same with ka.
It will cycle through the program options, but then stays on the word "complete" afterwards.
Bottom line, it won't display, hwy, city, etc, only the last "alert". so you wouldn't know if you were in hwy, or city noX.

Ci display in STi-r box:

minus the startup saying STI-r, it cycles through and will go to the initial display, such as Highway. it will even show alerts and go back to the highway setting, HOWEVER it will NOT cycle through the programming settings, it stays displaying "Program", and you can hear the audio as you cycle through them and even change them, but you can't see what is being changed, so you can't really adjust any settings.

Bottom line, close, but no cigar, the displays aren't interchangeable 100%.

Thank you RacerX for taking the time to look into it.
