Bel STI XR strange problem

Hey all ive searched around a bit on here trying to see if someone else has had a similar problem but no dice. 3 days ago I bought a 2nd hand Bel STI XR windscreen mounted detector that has been working well, has picked up laser and 2 k-band radars and was not found by a RDD when I drove past a car equipped with one. (along with the usual k-band doors)

The problem is after 5 mins of usage it has the old 'service required' with beeping message come up. I have just been unplugging and plugging it back in and its fine for another 5 mins. Do I really need to get it serviced or is there a way to reset/flash it to stop this annoyance?

The best range I got was from a k-band from about 450M away coming around a corner and the worst was tonight from about 100M coming over a hill.

I have no idea if its in warranty and I don't have a receipt for it so whats the standard repair fee if it does need to be fixed?

Also what are some good settings to have it on for band detection? I have it on default settings for highway use? (I do 90% highway driving).

You may need to send it away to get it flashed with a newer firmware. I remember I had this same problem with my STi. I purchased mine when it first came out in 2006. I had one of the earlier firmware A2 M? at the time. I've had it flashed a couple of times since. After being returned the first time I had firmware A4M9 and the service required never came up again.

Check and see what version you have.

What is an "XR"? Is that the same as the current STi, or is it a completely different model that might not be stealth?

From what I can gather the Sti XR is what the Sti Driver is marketed as in Australia and New Zealand.

Yep.

You'll need to send your detector back to Neltronics in Western Australia to service it.

For now I got mine set to.

Pilot H (so not to much is lit up on the dash)

Alamp ON

Voice ON

Meter THT (again not as much lights up)

aMute OFF

Brt Min

X OFF (not used here)


Assuming your in Queensland by the HP car pic you posted I think you have the same Gatso K band speed cameras we have here in VIC.
I haven't done a lot of driving here in OZ with it yet and I plan to leave it on the Highway setting for a while until I come across a few more speed cameras and get a better feel of it all.

Please let us know how you get on with the service/repair of your RD.

The problem u will have is Neltronics are asses, as u bought it 2nd hand, they wont touch it or if they do they will charge a fortune!

I suggest gewtting it sent to Bel in USA....

Remember, it is illegal in QLD to use a detector but not illegal to import one

Do you know if that's the same case for VIC?

I can't see anywhere on the customs website about them being illegal to import so I'm assuming it's the same for any state.

I am thinking of sending mine back to the US for the rampup fix but I don't trust customs.
