At present, only the 9500ix and 9500ci can be updated via the Internet. Supposedly there will be some sort of update software for the 9500i, but it has not been made available at the present time. Understanding your situation, your only options at present seem to be either the 9500ci or the 9500ix.

If you need a fix and there is a problem with your detector, then yes, you have to send back the control box and the main sensor. Therefore, if it is working as designed then you can leave it, if not you will have to either pay to have it removed or do it yourself and send back the components for repair. If it is just an update or new firmware that will fix your issue then Bel will inform you to just send back the control box.

As MEM-TEK mentioned, the STi-R does not have user enabled updates.

Customs will not keep it, and the legality issue only comes into play if you have it in your car.

Purchase from a local seller if you are worried about customs, then it can stay within your border. All service issues can be dealt directly with your local seller, and they can send it back to Bel.

Hope that helps.

Removal of a 9500ci or STi-R antenna is easy since Escort's engineers thoughtfully included a waterproof inline connector which is located roughly 5 feet back from the antenna. Of note, 9500ci and STi-R owners should put a dab of Vaseline inside this connector, plug it together and then wipe off any excess Vaseline on the outside of the connector using a towel moistened with isopropyl alcohol, and then loom wrap the connector with electrical tape. Finally, install a wire tie around the electrical tape to prevent it from unraveling due to engine heat. This is a guaranteed and sure-fire way to prevent corrosion within this inline connector under the hood for at least 5 years.

For car afficionados, Vaseline in all under-the-hood connectors (except high voltage ignition connectors) will prevent a lot of random computer error codes down the road. I've used this technique for every car which I have owned. Interestingly, this idea was told to me by a TV cable repairman years ago.

Why not for ignition too? I often use it on spark plug boots, etc.

I am not keen on exposing any flammable petroleum based product directly to either high engine heat or to extremely high voltages. I prefer to use that special made-for-the-purpose silicone based stuff on my spark plugs to prevent the boots from sticking to the plugs.

Now, that's a very good point! I have to admit that I've used it (petroleum jelly) to really pack the boots on plugs/caps/coils, mostly to prevent water infiltration (e.g., for ice racing). I've only seen the silicone in the tiny thimble-sized tubes that come with new wires. Is it available in larger amounts?
