Bel 980 Problem ?L01 cal

I bought a "NEW! Never been used" Bel 980 from Ebay. I told the guy I would take it as long as he is sure it works. He agreed he would go out and plug it in and make sure all was cool. I don't know the history on it other than that. I do know that after waiting a week to get it, I plugged it in and if fails the self tests and does a constant ?L01 cal with beep. Pushing the AUD button or Power button makes it shut off.

Anyone have any idea on how to fix it? Bel says they don't even service it any more.

Unfortunately for me, I emailed the guy and asked how much he wanted. He said $75 plus shipping, I said no prob I'll do $80 shipped he agreed. Well in between he puts on a Buy it now for $75 and then closes the auction with no bidders.

Point being, I can't even flag his 100% feedback if he doesn't refund the money. Maybe a pay pal dispute but they'll probably give me a hard time since it was purchased outside of the auction. Who knows.

Anyways, anyone know how to calibrate it? Can I shoot a laser pen at it or something?

Sorry to hear that, but more then likely you won't get your money back and not sure if Beltronics will fix that model any more? PayPal will not refund your money since it was out side of the auction but you can file a claim and see what happens? I would stay away from that auction site. No Don't no how to calibrate it, needs either an adjustment or parts need to replaced? But Like I said, believe Beltronics no longer services that model?

Just for curiosity did it look new not used? I am having a real hard time believing a 980 was not used that is old, I would say approaching 8 years old if not a hair more. As for fixing it yourself, no go, I think Bel should still be able to service it, but it will 80 bucks min. Now the hard part 80 bucks plus 80 bucks that is a new Bel 955. I would do this, if you trade it in to bel you will get 50 bucks, I would use that money to get a 940 (I think is $179) or 955 (which retails for $199 on their site) So say you get the 955 minus 50 that is 150, which is a better detector than a fixed 980.
