Default Just got a Bel X65, and now fear I made a bad choice.

Found this forum AFTER I made the purchase! Seems like everyone around here is all about the X50 and that the reputation of the X65 has been hurt by defective units, or bad laser protection. I'm in Indiana, and I'm not even sure if they use laser around here. Anyway, I suppose I could return it or sell it to get an X50. I've read on here that many say that it's a coin toss, and Radar Roy LOVES the X65, so then why the debate? I dunno, maybe I'm just paranoid over nothing. Any advice or feedback would be appreciated. Also, does anyone know what's the most commonly used in Indiana?

    Thanks,
    Jason

Hi Jpoprock..........welcome to the board. I felt the same way you did when I made the decision on the RX65. Just use it for a while and you will be at ease..........buuuulieeeevvee me!!!! I was skeptical as well but trust me............it is a GREAT detector. After using it for a week, I am VERY happy with it. BOTH the X50 and RX65 are GREAT detectors and BOTH have their problems. The X50 has just as many problems as the RX65 and the performance of both is pretty much equal. You made a great choice.......no worries. Radar Roy knows what he is talking about!!!

welcome to the forum!! the Bel unit you have is a great unit!!
    You will be well protected.
I am from Indiana as well and there is some laser guns here they are very scarce and they are only being used up north towards Garry and that area.
There are other members here as well from Indiana. Do NOT turn off X band it is still being used here in the state of Indiana.

Whew! Thanks! My wife will be the one using it since she has the lead foot. She can't get ANY more tix or she could lose her job (Sales rep). I don't really speed, but the frigging cops around my area are THICK at all times. Especially the State Police. I've never seen it like this. I was thinking about picking one up though for myself since I do drive quite a bit. It's always nice to know if there are cops around, whether I'm speeding or not.

    Thanks!

That reminds me of something I wanted to ask... My wife will be using the unit and primarily drives on "state roads". Which around here are 55 and even less when passing thru small towns (which is like crazy). You can't go 70/55 around here or you're gonna get a ticket. I'm an insurance agent, and see it all the time. 65/55 is a tough one. I don't see them as often, but I have seen them. I usually drive 60-62. But like I said, she'll be driving on 55mph rural highway type roads, and then also in the cities/small towns. I don't think she speeds on those roads though. It's just if she's running late, she'll do the 70/55 everytime, and has been popped three times (two were diverted)!

So, it gets confusing as to what to turn on or off. I'm assuming that she'll want to use it highway mode right?? And what other things do I turn on? Do you have to turn things on and off all the time? I guess I need to know how to set it up (or your best advice on it).

Also, I'm sure it says in the manual where the best place to mount it is right? Do you all agree w/ where that location is? Thanks!

My advice to you is............just turn EVERYTHING on!!!! And turn the Ka detection to Intl' as opposed to USA. Just turn it all ON and tell your wife that this is a DAMN good detector and ANYTIME it goes off she had better slow down. That way, when it falses she will slow down too...........it will just make her slow down period!!! Like you said she is in danger of losing her job or her license or ..........god forbid........her life. Just get her to slow down any way you can!!

For the most part if you are out in the rural and not a lot of business (automatic doors or alarms) use the highway mode.
In town and where there could be falsing going on use one of the city modes.
Members who have this particualr unit can elaborate on which settings work best when dealing with falses.

Just make sure you do not turn off X band. By default X band is enabled but I know with the whistler unit I have if I use City 2 it disables X band.

Other owners can fill you in as to what settings will disable something.

As far as mounting goes that will be a matter of opinion. Some say low if you are worried about laser and high if you are not.
From my testing last weekend with my V1 it made no difference on detection on radar or laser. With the Whistler it seemed to do better high then low on both laser and radar

Good thing about mounting it high above the rear view mirror it is harder to see from would be theives.

Yeah, and like RIGHTNOW, not soon. First time I used an RD, an original Escort back maybe 20 years ago, I got a ticket because I didn't slow down fast enough. The warning is good, but usually the time to get the speed down is very, very short.

This thread says to turn it to USA mode, not Intl. When did the opinion change?

I just said that because it will pick up more frequencies. I think your objective is to set that thing up so it goes off a LOT!!! Sometimes a detector is a great way to force us to check our speed. Especially if you are in danger of losing your license. Just make it go off a lot and she will always be conscious of her speed. Although that may backfire and she will get annoyed with the thing too............I dunno.
