I thought about mounting my sti-r behind the bmw grill, considering that the grill is plastic, is this considered a bad idea?

You will want nothing inhibiting the reciever otherwise you will see a serious reduction in detection.
don't do it
thanks. apparently the escort radar install video finds it to be no problem, but i'll go ahead and mount lower where I don't mind cutting.
What model BMW do you have? I have my STI-r mounted directly under the front license plate of my 5-series mounted on the horizontal plastic cross-bar that runs beneath the grill. Though only about 16 inches off the ground, with a clear view of the road in front it beats my V1 (mounted above rear view mirror) on Ka every time. No cutting required. Not sure if your model has this horizonatal cross bar below the grill, but you won't be disappointed with recpetion mounting there if you do have it. I would agree that any kind of material in front of the antenna risks cutting reception markedly
You may want to visit speedtraphunter.net . There is a four part vid of Bob the VEIL guy getting a 9500ci installed in a late model BMW. Scroll down to vidios.
Also there is a vid of Bob in Belscorts shop reviewing the install.
