thats interesting barry, in another thread i created people were saying that the grill in front of the detector greatly reduces the range?

You might want to watch this vid from the Veil Guy. Start around 4:25 and he starts talking about where he has his Remote 9500CI mounted.

I detector with a clear view of the road will always perform far better then one behind a bumper. But behind a grill when only parts of the antenna are covered will give crap performance. But behind a bumper with the antenna fully covered it will out perform an antenna partially covered.

So it has to be either fully uncovered or fully covered.

There is a good thread somewhere about the do's and don'ts of mounting behind bumpers. Types of plastics and curvature of the plastic and so on.

Yeah and the performance of The Veil Guy's 9500ci is drastically reduced because of where it is mounted. Check out the videos in this Whistler SE review. If a Whistler can hang with your Belscort M3 remote against C/O radar, something is seriously wrong with your Belscort M3 remote.

Mounting a radar antenna behind any obstruction is not recommended, because you never know what you're gonna get. Against the very difficult to detect Multanova, you need all the sensitivity you can get, so I highly discourage attempting it. But if you insist, our friend Metalflame, who I personally consider to be the utmost expert on obstructed mounting, had this to say about it:

Also,I don't know if this holds true for circular polarized radars, but horizontal grille slats reduce detection range more than vertical slats.

    Avoid mounting behind:
    *bumper that's made from/with carbon fibers,Poly-Carbonate
    *things made with graphite,teflon,lead
*metallic paint or old paints with lead
    *any metal objects
    *thick grilles

Some of the newer BMW models,AUDI's and VW's have have very "bad" bumpers, that don't pass Radar signals well.VAG cars have bumpers from PPP-EPDM which attenuate radar signals.

Bumpers made with/from PP,ABS+PET, ABS, ASA, EVA, PS will pass Radar signals.

Another VERY important thing is to ALWAYS mount radar receiver at least 2-3 inches behind the bumper or any other (plastic) obstacle.

if your going to buy one of the most sensitive RDs in the world, wouldn't you want it to have a clear view of the road? ****, if someone told me they were going to mount their Ci or sti-r behind a bumper I'd tell them to just go buy a refurbished 8500.

I'm not sure about the laws where your from but in most parts of Australia if your caught with a detector its a instant loss of licence, a court appearence and a few thousand dollars in fines and a about -40 demerit points which would mean you could have no licence for years.

I'm from VA, so being caught with an RD means a fine, but cops don't look for them in the grill/bumper, they look in the windshield. Now if you've got smarter cops where you are, then thats a different story.

Since the topic of mounting behind a bumper/plastic is being discussed in another thread and The Veil Guy responded there, I'll play devils advocate and post his response about why he did the opposite of what djrams80 and myself suggested.

    Simple and for several reasons.

    1) Relative comparison between both remotes (the STi-R and the 9500ci) of different mounting positions for long-term review.
    2) Protection of the receiver head of the 9500ci to make long-term feasibility/reliability comparisons of different mounting positions.
    3) Escort personally signed off on the installation and condition of each when I was invited to their factory.
    4) Performance variations between the STi-R and the 9500ci are primarily due to programming/firmware variances. The STi-R is roughly three times quicker to responding and alerting to QT/brief radar than the 9500ci/Redline with its band segmentation and radar rejection settings turned off. When the STi-R is in its standard configuration, the performance of both remotes are nearly identical.

The simple fact that certain intelligence quotients can't understand that, is not my problem.

And, I am not interested in wasting any more time rehashing a childish argument (been there, done that) with those that would just assume to p*ss on a point of view garnered from painstaking efforts just because it is not consistent with theirs.

    Capisce?

I'm not sure about the laws where you're from but from where I'm from it's nine demerit points and a little over $2000.

The grill on my car is plastic and with holes. I think a metal one would be far worse. what are your thoughts on mounting the STI with either behind the bumper or behind that grill (lower grill and vertical for multanova? I spoke to a guy at a radar detector shop today and he rekcons not much difference.. Its a hard choice!!!
