    Default V940 vs. 8500 X50

I know its sounds like a lop-sided comparison, but it really isn't. I've been searching for my 1st detector for awhile, and the V940 caught my eye first for being cheap and powerful. I was recommended here in my intro post to go for the 8500 X50 refurb. But, recently, I looked at the 2007 Guys of LIDAR tests and found the V940 to be the same, if not better, to the whole vector series and the X50 on straightaway tests! Just by that alone I'm heavily persuaded to the V940. The next test was around the curve, and this is where the X50 shined. The vectors were close to each other as usual, but in Ka band detection, the V940 detected 600 feet after the X50! On K band detection, the V940 was only 200 feet behind on a 1000 foot course, and I'm not worrying there.

So, for only one bad test result, do you think its worth it to upgrade to the X50? In my mind, not really, but I would like some outside opinions.

The X50 is about the same on detection, the only difference is in features, of which there is no comparison between an X50 and a 940. The 940 has no features. If X falses bother you, you can turn them off on the X50.

Sorry I forgot to mention that. X falses will not bother me much since I'll only be in town, prone to door openers, for only half a mile before the rest of my driving will be highway. As for features, I'm not too technical, so the lack of band frequency doesn't bother me, nor does the extra gimmicks. So I guess that means the V940 will do.

V940 has a feature call LoX which will only set off an X band sound when it reaches full bars.

Oh really? That's almost as good as locking out X completely, so it's good enough for me. Thanks for the info!

Sounds like you already made up your mind on the 940. What's the question? I do think you might regret not having some of these options later on.

I understand what you're getting at, but I just wanted to see what I was losing out by getting the 940 over the X50. I know its still not better than the X50 by any means, but i guess its a good first RD for me.

The v940 was my first real detector and it served me well. You'll be happy with it but if you get more into radar detection you'll move on like I did eventually to the V1.

Just what I needed to hear! Thanks, dtrail.
The more and more I think, I've come to some conclusions. As a new driver, I'm not going to be a speed demon at all, so even if my detector only gives me 3-5 seconds to react, if I'm doing 3-5 over the PSL, that's plenty of time to react to get under the limit without slamming the brakes.
