Performance according to the Guys of Lidar tests is almost exactly the same. Only difference is features so just research the features and decide. Although if you compare the 8500 (non X50) from the test in 2006 to the V995 and V955 in 2007 the 8500 performed better. So I have to say go with the 8500. Unless your state uses POP mode which you can find out on this site. If they use POP mode which is different than instant on then go with one of the beltronics because the non X50 8500s don't detect POP mode.

Don't know if you ever made a decision, but I'd say it's worth it to go for the 8500 or the v995. I have a 955 and an 8500 and while the range is great on the 955, it sucks not to be able to turn off X band and not to be able to know what Ka band is being received. Both my Belscorts are S7's. However, the 955 seems to have better off-axis sensitivity than the 8500. Don't know if that's just random variation or what.

Technically you CAN turn off X band by using city mode. City mode doesnt really cripple K that much (in fact in actual usage, I cant tell a difference). So if you like X off, you can use City No X. I still prefer Highway anyway since X is used in Ohio, but that's just me.
