    Question STI Driver Seized, Ontario

So I feel like crap as my two year old STI Driver has worked flawlessly for me and saved me countless times in both Canada (Ontario) and the US. So much so that I suggested that a friend would have no issues with using one here in Ontario.

This morning he was busted and the circumstances were wierd.

    1. No Alerts through the STI
    2. LEO pulled him over (Bradford P****e Service, Ontario)
    3. LEO asked specifically for his STI... "Where's your STI Son?"
    4. Ticket issued and STI Seized

My friend does not recall the detector going off this morning... As well, in this town that he drives through, he's seen LEO with vehicles pulled over and his detector has gone off to that but not on direct contact. The STI was mounted in such a way that it would only have been visible from standing over the windshield and looking in... This is a town that he passes through and never stops in... Bottom line is he's sure that he did nothing to attract their interest in him or his STI...

LEO informed him that the STI is indeed detectable...

What gives? Is there a different RDD that this small hick town is using that the big boys don't have.

The only thing that makes sense to me is he somehow saw it when your friend passed through and the cop was in a traffic stop. Let's face it, the STI driver is lit up rather pretty. My guess is he noted the car's tag and description, and was waiting for a chance to nail him. RDD's do not tell the model of radar detector they detected, but because it never alerted before, he assumed it was a STI driver. In other words this cop has a hard on for nailing detector users.

I have no doubt we're missing a huge part of this story. The officer might have noticed him stopped at a traffic light, saw him at a gas station, whatever and noticed the RD. It may have been days or weeks earlier when the officer was off duty, and in a small town like Bradford it would be an easy thing for the officer to remember and keep an eye out for your car next time he's on duty.

There are *NO* Radar Detector Detectors (RDD) that identify the brand or model of RD in use even if the STi was detectable. Furthermore, if such a device did exist that could detect the STi, I highly doubt a small town (less than 25,000 people!) police force would have it first.

It sucks, that's for certain. It's going to be a monster hit to his insurance.. But this is nothing more than a lesson to hide your countermeasures if you're in Ontario.

It is detectable, but not by an RDD. It can be detected by these things LEOs have called "eyeballs". If the STi is in plain view, the LEO may see it. Also, if he decides to wait until you pass and then shoots you with I/O and you slam on the brakes, that's a pretty good indication there's an RD on board.

Stealth is all about how you mount and use your countermeasures as much as which countermeasures you choose.

He could have guessed "STi" because his Spectre *didn't* alert but he saw the detector on the windshield, or the brake lights went on after an I/O hit.

That's what I was hoping to be honest. I feel bad for him but I wanted to make sure that LEO was not out with something new. When you've been driving with the STI Driver for a while, you react differently to the alerts than a newby and I'm leaning to think that although he does not think he did anything, it's hard to avoid hitting the brakes the first few times you here it alert.

The other issue is his STI was bought online I believe through Ebay... Not sure what effect that would have on the quality or the legitimacy of the unit. (Although he assures me it was a high volume Ebayer)...

Thanks all and continued success driving fast safely.

I totally understand how you feel. It's like being robbed.

What a freakin' shame dude. Sorry for the loss. I'm really surprised that he knew what it was. If it happens again, you should carry a decoy detector that you can give him instead (i.e. $10 cobra).

You may want to check out a Redline for a replacement.

    Hey Weeth,

I already have a throwaway detector and strongly suggest that anyone running in Ontario do the same.

My friend was not carrying one. An expensive lession but a lesson non the less...

    Cheers...

Good idea about the throw awaw detector!

There is something wrong with your story. A big piece is missing from it. Find out and let us know

A throw-away detector won't fly if the cop already "knows" you have an STi though... have your friend buy a Redline from Radarbusters or another authorized dealer, then hardwire and mount it high where it can't be seen from outside... then keep a cheapo handy to hand to the highway robber.

It also won't fly if the cop feels that the internals are not warm. He will know that it wasn't turned on and that you have another detector in the vehicle. They read these forums and know the tricks that we use.
