Why does Roy not reccomend the Bel v995?
My 8500 x50 has issues, so I'm looking for another good detector. The absolute most I want to spend on another is $220 shipping and all. On his site i can get the v955 for $141, or the v995 for$201 with the 10% discount. I've put in many hours last week researching the forum about these two, as well as the Rx65. What I dont understand is that the v995 and Rx65 are simalar, but Roy doesn't reccomend it for the U.S. Whats even more confusing is the fact that people who have one swear by it. They even say the v955 has the same range, but the drawback is that it's firmware is not upgradable and i dont want to spend that much money on something that will be obsolete in a few years. I've read most of the posts on these two and still cant decide. My biggest question is why does he say to stay away from the v995. Help!!!

Upgradeable on any Bel or Escort is a joke, it NEVER happens. Don't make a purchase decision based on that. As far as the 995 goes, it is basically the same as a 940,955, or 965, but with more features.
If you have a budget of $220, you can get a refurbished RX65 from Escort's fleabay store for $199, or a refurb 8500 for $150, or a refurb X50 for $200.

Why don't you just send in the X50 for a tuneup?

The wife thinks its a waste of money, but I know better. That is also why my budget is $220 because she's buying it for me. Thanks to bigalinwv, I stopped by Escorts' "mebay" store and found a factory refurb RX65 for $199 shipped which will be perfect. I saw that it had better detection than the x50 which was $30 more. After having the x50 for a while i kind of want something different though. I know the're fairly the same, but the RX has voice and that KA USA mode that bumps up the reaction time.

Re: Why does Roy not reccomend the Bel v995?
Long story. I bought it from a guy for $150 a while back and didnt pay attention that the serial number was gone. He powered it up and it displayed 8500 x50 Blue blah blah blah so I took it. It was also missing a screw which made me open it to check it out when I got home. It was the real deal but the speaker was cracked so the sound was kind of low. After it started doing the self cal every couple of days I called escort and asked them about sending it in to be fixed with no serial number. They said it would be a flat rate of $99 and they would give me a new number. Sounded kind of fishy because I read that they didnt take them in like that. And since it was open and the speaker was jacked up i didnt think it would be worth it. I might've had to pay for the speaker too.

The RX65 is a good detector, but wait until you hear the voice! Tell me what you think of it. IMHO it sounds like a serial killer.

Yeah, sounds like a serial killer or a power up on a '90s video game! Cant wait to use the threat mode because I used the expert mode on my x50 and it was great.
