Thumbs down Ticket in Wyoming...Bel V955 didn't make a peep. What gives?

Hi all. I would like a little help with something. I was passing through WY today and got into a speed trap. My Bel V955 didn't register anything, so I asked the officer how he got my speed. He said RADAR....I said "Are you sure?" and pointed to my RD. He said "I'm sure" and proceeded to issue me a ticket.

Now, I was obviously suspicious (ok, pissed) because my Bel has never failed me in the 5 or 6 years that I have owned it. Not to mention that he told me that I was going 76-77. The fact that he gave me a range instead of a solid number made me think he was full of it.

As I went through the rest of the (police) state, there was heavy state trooper activity. I passed 2-3 more cars that looked to be in ambush mode...not a single peep.

Are they using new equipment? My RD worked just fine about 5 min before I got hit and about 10 min after (well, it worked on other things, not the other troopers I encountered)...and has been fine all through Colorado.

I was thinking of fighting the ticket and getting Beltronics to recertify my RD, etc. That would be pointless if they are using a new band or something. What do you think?

    EDIT: I had originally said my RD was a V940. It's actually a V955.

could have been QT. Or it could have been an old 940. I suggest you look into upgrading your defenses.

could have been speed tracker made by Kustoms witch does not emit radar.

Doing some quick research on QT, that sounds plausible I suppose. That wouldn't really explain the lack of response from the other troopers that I passed though, unless they all happened to be using the technique perfectly.

I don't recall any issues picking up laser...but maybe I was unaware. I hope my unit isn't getting old and tired...I'd like to upgrade pretty soon though, especially with Bel's trade-in program. Getting tickets while using a detector kinda defeats the purpose...if this one is faulty or behind the times, it's gotta go. Just wanted to make sure that was the case before dropping a few hundred on a new RD (on top of the ticket cost! )

So no one thinks it's strange that he didn't give me just one number?

well you could go down to the police station that works from, and have them pull his notes for you. You are allowed to see the which method he used and when his equipment was calibrated/certified.

Yeah, but unfortunately, it's ~3 hours away.

There's a decent chance you were hit with laser. Since the officer would normally be pointing the beam at the front of the car, the radar detector may miss it. Some are better than others at picking laser up, but not alerting to it, especially at close range would not be unusual at all.

    OP,

Where at in WY? I just went thru there a couple of times recently via I-80 ( I drove pretty much all of I-80 in WY) and only saw 1 LEO and even he wasn't trying to take in Revenue

I would say it's time to either send in your Bel and get it checked / tuned or get a upgrade because 5 to 6 yrs on a RD w/out a tune is allot of RD mileage . At least you can rule out this potential problem w/your RD if you have it sent in for tune or if you decide to trade up. My Redline started behaving very mysteriously by not picking up K and KA band one day and the problem seemed to go away. A little while later the problem duplicated again and I knew it was time to send it back into Escort to see the Doc this might be the beginning of the end for your RD.

Laser is possible because it's really hard for most RD's to pick it up, My V1 has missed it so it would be very hard for a medium grade (no offense) RD to pick it up if that was the culprit.

    Good luck.

It was I-80 EB, right at the eastern edge of Rawlins County. I had seen zero LEOs until then, but from there, they were every few miles until around Laramie.

I guess it's time to send her in. And no offense taken. I had wanted to get a better one from the get-go, but I just got a $2xx ticket when I decided that I needed an RD, so mine, which was around 220-260 at the time really added up to a lot on that particular day. At least she has paid for herself several times over the years. Many cross country trips...making darn good time, mind you.

So, from what I have gathered from you guys, it seems like this may have actually been a legit stop/citation...that changes things a bit. I may have to pay this one...it's not worth the drive and the day off work to go to court if I don't have a solid case/argument. At the time, my fiancee and I both agreed that it was worth the 6 hr round trip if the ticket was bogus...
