    Default Bel 985 No Audio

My 985 has worked great for many years. Suddenly, no tones either when starting up or when threats detected. The LEDs display shows the threat but no audible tone.

I pulled the speaker out of the case, unsoldered one wire and ohmed the speaker with 3 different digital ohm meters. It reads 31 to 33 ohms, so I'm assuming the speaker is good. Can a speaker still be bad, even if it reads the correct resistance when measured?

Any other ideas as to what could be killing the audio alerts?

Sounds like the speaker Josh, there was a seller on eBay awhile back that was selling replacements

Just solder another speaker no matter what resistance it has to see if this is the problem...then buy a good one...
If i remember correctly resistance was 12 ohms on bel speakers.

    Thanks Radar Roy and gra.

Most of the 1 1/8" speakers on Ebay are rated at 32 ohms. Since mine reads 31-33 (depending on which ohm meter I use), I assume it's good. But anything is possible....may be something else wrong with the speaker besides it being open.

I had to replace the speaker on my other Bel 985 a couple of years ago. It read infinity, which indicated an open speaker. I wish I could remember exactly how many ohms the replacement speaker read. It fixed the problem, in any event. Now that I think about it, this might be the same Bel 985 that I repaired before. I've got 4 of them....hard to keep them straight. Excellent detectors.
