Default The truth about autoscan and POP mode????

I have read many post about autoscan and exactly what it does. Some say that it splits the X frequenies into separate bands and only alerts on particular bands. Others say that it also monitors K band, but then other say that it doesn't. Does it hinder performance on K and Ka bands?

Some say to cut off POP, why buy a POP detector only to turn it off. I have only gotten 3 POP "falses" in 2 mnths from two different detectors.

Does anyone really know, or at least can we all agree?

For what it's worth, here's how I think it works:

Autoscan automatically adjusts the alert thresholds, based on the signals detected within a certain timefreame. For example, the detector might receive multiple weak X-Band alerts within a certain timeframe and assume that you are in the city around a lot of false alert sources. So, it raises the alert threshold so that weak X-Band sources below a certain level are not reported. Then, if it hasn't received any X-band flase alerts for a certain amount of time, it again lowers the threshold so that even weak signals are reported.

X-Band is definitely filtered. Whether K-Band is or not is up for debate. Detector manufacturers are usually very reluctant to admit to any K-Band filtering. But I wouldn't worry about it too much...

They would have to be crazy to filter Ka.

I agree, it is kind of retarded for people to run out and buy the latest and greatest, just to turn off POP. However, some people are more concerned about having a "quiet" detector, at the risk of not being alerted to every possible threat. I haven't experienced enough falsing with the V1 or the RX-65 to make me want to turn it off.

Thanks so much for the input!!!

I rather have a noisy detector then a quiet one. If you want quiet, then don't buy a detector and go the speed limit.

Ah, but why not have the best of both worlds? It is relatively possible. Just have to move to a state that disallows X band. Better yet, move to a country that only has Ka.

Just FYI Beltronics since the take over from Escort has done some qurky things with there detectors, basicly over hauled the features for the worst. Where once was that Autoscan and City modes DID adjust BOTH X and K now in the newer RD's it only effects X band. As far as Autoscan the reason why you see the back and forth is beacuse of this confusion from Beltronics. The older Vectors manual specificaly stated that Autoscan effects both X and K. But in the new Beltronic RD's the manual is very sketchy what it does.

Here is MY manual for my older Vector 985

Oh and the POP thing, your more likely to get a hit by laser. It is that rare. And even so you more likely to rely upon the officer having to switch from POP to InstantON, so your back again just to worry about InstantON.

POP has nothing to do with autoscan. Think of POP as another radar band, you have it on or off.

Autoscan attempts to "filter" the radar bands and supress "falses".

As to how Autoscan actually accomplishes this, I believe Jim explained it best. Other than that no one can get a strieght answer out of Bel either.

I have to say that I've been VERY impressed with the V895's (same detector that asianfire has, and boomerman as well) detection and range. Sure, it may not have the advanced "filtering" capabilities that the RX-65 (or perhaps even V995) has....but I swear, I think it has the detection and range of both the V995 and the RX-65 (minus the extra features - such as Ku band detection, software upgradeable, tech mode, hardwire kit and carrying case). But as far as being a pure detector goes....it has alerted me to all bands of all police radar with plenty of advance warning and at far distances.....around curves and over hills, etc. And you can figure out pretty quickly and pretty easily which alerts are actual police radar and which ones are falses. With that kind of performance and at the price that it came, I'll leave it on all the time and put up with a few falses every now and then as well.....
