I have been reading posts about the STi and am wondering if anyone who actually has one has been surprised, disappointed or feel that the STi has exceeded even your expectations. It would be interesting to see what the comments are - not just that it does "false" on some occasions or gets hot to the touch. I don't have to worry about being stealthy here in Arizona but I think the STi has the potential to be a top notch RD and maybe it already is. I haven't had to opportunity to see one.
I'm very happy with my purchase, good detecting abilities, looks great and above all for me, "stealthy"
I have posted a few vids to my STi vs. Gatso in the countermeasure section, have a look
I´ve been using STi now for a week and I´ve been using another detector - Bel 975F(ilter by Q) with it. Because the remote 975F is located behind the grill and STi inside cockpit, they don't interfere each other.
Ka falsing is NOT a problem here in Finland, because we do not have older detectors in traffic. In common, detectors are illegal and therefore quite rare.
I´ve got only one strong false Ka in the middle of nothing, while 975F remained silent.
I´ve had several very good "real life" opportunitues to test STi. With undirectional hits from K door openers, the results varies between STi and 975 a lot. In most cases 975 gos off first but STi will follow immedeately. When K source is passed - 975 becomes silent but STi continues alerting - and that I think is quite irritating. Same occurrence could be seen in Ka too.
With direct Ka STi beats out 975F 6-0 BUT with non-direct (90 degree sideways or behind) the performance is equal

In NZ we have almost exclusively Ka with a smidgen of laser. The STi seems very strong on Ka so I'm pleased with that. Now I'm running tech mode and I can see the frequency of the alert I can weed out the falses pretty efficiently and... if it came down to having to reduce sensitivity to decrease the number of falses I'd prefer to keep it as it is. I like the voice alerts and auto mute, it seems nicely built and finshed and it looks like it's a current piece of technology not something left over from the Apollo space program
Happy with mine I do get the odd Ka false there's a fixed one that my RX-65 alerts to sometimes that the Sti alerts to as well in the exact same spot. Driving around the odd Ka comes on especially near the 401(highway).
I chat with a Leo online and he says you'd be suprised how many Spectre alerts he gets in a day so there may be more out there than I realize.
I had a Laser encounter yesterday. The favourite urban Leo trap 80 to 60 transition hes hiding behind a hedgerow and shoots point blank sub 300 feet for sure. The first time I approached oncoming traffic flashed lights so I was proabably going under the 60 even and no alert... crap. Second pass through got the Laser alert... whew I had no confidence in the RX-65 with laser and if the STI hadnt come out I'd have added a jammer by now.
If I didnt drive in a Spectre jurisdiction I dont believe I would purchase the Sti especially if I owned a V1. There's only one Ka band the Sti that it appears to excel on over other detectors.
If you have an unlimited budget then buy one for the added Ka protection but if I had a set budget for this I would recommend the RX-65 and one of the new jammers.
I am pleased with mine. I have never gotten a false Ka alert but since RD's are illegal in this state maybe there are not too many RD's around. I have done some extensive driving in states where they are legal (Md, Pa, NJ) with no false alerts either but maybe I was just lucky.
My only complaint would be the useless (to me anyway) voice alert. I can hear it but the band announcement is not discernible with the car radio on. It is no big deal since the normal audio alerts of chirps and buzzes are easily discernible. I have just turned off the audio alert function.
Since I tend to leave the sensitivity on highway I do get a few K and x falses from various motion sensors, proximity sensors etc. If I put it in the city mode most of these go away.
I haven't had a laser encounter yet or if I did either the detector didn't pick it up or I was not going fast enough to get stopped.
You can turn X band off, not authorized and not used in Virginia. Sounds like you might have a good one. Keep us posted on any falses you get when driving outside of Virginia.
I am very pleased with mine.
I have had 1 ka false since buying. Atleast 50 hours of driving with it.
x band off
just starting to use tech mode
Mine gets very warm after 8 hours of use but all my detectors have gotten warm. I wonder how hot it will get when its 25C in the shade
Love mine I find the range is unbelivable sometiimes.
So glad to hear that most of you are getting positive results from your STi.
