Default Attn: New RD users or STi users....

You are not invincible with your New RD or STi.

You may find yourself driving faster than before your recent purchase, but I think you're falling into a sense of false security.

My suggestion is to keep the speed in check for the 1st couple of months, and see how your RD responds... in your surroundings... where are the falses in your area or on your commute to work etc etc.

Remember, not all patrolling LEO's have their radar on.... I've come across some traps in the city where the STi has remained silent, and the cop's been sitting in the cruiser just observing traffic.... If you're noticeably quicker than the flow, you could be in trouble. I've driven thru 2 traps in city limits this week where the cops just been observing traffic without radar on.

I've also seen moving cruisers where radar hasn't been used.

    Remember... keep your eyes open!!!!

Yeah, my friend got popped the other day and got a ticket for 14 over.

The cop said he was 'pacing' him.

Anyone that relies ONLY on their RD is not smart. You have to employ many tatics to avoid a ticket. An RD is only tool to help. Understand this and youo will be safe.

I dunno. Maybe it is the experience I have with RD or perhaps the fact that I started using them right around the time I was legally able to drive (not that that stopped me from driving a little earlier  ) but I don't really see my speed being different with or without...

Keep in mind, RD is only a tool. It reduces your risk of a ticket, sure - if you listen to it. But you aren't invincible. Even with the whole shebang, CB radio, scanner, RD, laser jammer, etc etc you can still get paced!

When I went to court for my RD case, there was a fellow who was paced by an OPP for doing 170 KPH in his black Lamborgini, which apparently had a vanity plate to the effect of "Blk Bull".

The OPP saw the sports car fly by on 407 ETR as he was on the on-ramp, took off after it, caught up to it (must have taken a while!) and paced him for a short distance before turning on the flashing lights.

The Lambo driver said to the Justice of the Peace that he was taking his wife to Niagara Falls for dinner, claimed he was "only doing about 130 KPH" and that "he would never be as irresponsible to put his wifes' well being in danger", the JP just chuckled and nailed him for the full 170 KPH.

Driving fast without being safe and smart about it is an accident waiting to happen, let alone the inevitable ticket!

Hey a Lamborghini at 170 km/h isn't even stretching it's legs yet... probably safer than some of the clapped-out Hondas doing 70 km/h here...

I dunno. There may be some truth to him only doing 130...

    BINGO!

    Well said, SAS.

My driving habits don't change....I just use it as a "secondary" line of defense (or perhaps even LAST resort, would be more accurate). 90+% of tickets I have received in my lifetime involve highway and interstate driving. And since I have over the past dozen years or so AVERAGED driving around 50-60,000 miles a year (outside manufacturer's sales rep, responsible for large geographical territories), I am on the road A LOT! Then, add that I have family and friends that live in other states, and I drive more than most people. Having a radar detector hasn't changed my driving style and habits....I just use it as a "friendly reminder" on those long trips when my foot becomes a little heavy and I'm lulled into a zombie-like state (no offense, V1 users  ) after being on the road for many, many hours.....

I get a big kick out of people buying a top of the line detector and get busted, then they act all surprised and ask what gives. Having a RD is only half the battle against a speed trap.

Ultimately the RD is not a factor in avoiding a speed trap, the user is what determines how well the RD performs, a wise person with a whistler will avoid a speed trap where as a fool even with a top line RD will walk right into a speed trap.
