Default thinking about painting my car

I am thinking about going to walmart and buying a bunch of cans a spray paint and painting my car. I don't have much of a clear coat anymore (if the car even had one to begin with), I did it with my previous car, a 1983 Mazda b2000, a hoopdy(sp) truck. It turned out well, it really didn't look that bad. It only cost my about $15 and it went from orange to black without any fade into orangeish-black. I was wondering what you guys think, good idea, bad? I know it isn't the professional way of doing things but I think it may turn out alright. If I do it I will for sure post before and after pics.

Well the car will look like garbage but is that the look you are going for (like the flat-black primered street rods of the '50's, I like that look...)?

What I would do first is spend $15 on some good polish, maybe something like a T-cut, and some good wax. Work your ass off on Saturday to polish it, then wax the sucker on Sunday, and you'll probably end up with a very good looking automobile.

It really doesnt have much potential for looking good no matter what I do to it. I had it waxed before and it didnt come anywhere close to shiney. I got the paint today, when I get the fundage I will go buy some body filler and patch a couple of pretty bad rust spots, and get rid of the bolts that are where my wing was. On my truck it looked decent for a 21 year old mazda truck. Gotta love walmart's 98c spray paint.

wax won't help if you don't have a clear coat. you need to polish the paint to level it down.

otherwise, you could try the roller approach as outlined here or similarly on H-T.

you may get an ok finnish from a can but it will take primer and a fair few coats... sanding and spraying........ sanding and spraying etc...

the only time i'll use a can is if i'm patching up a scratch, or scuff or a rust hole, or if i've had to replace a wing.. ..

this is also why you have to wax the car at least twice a year. or maybe once every 3 month.

if you let the wax go then the paint will errode.

Yea u cant just go straight to spray paint without making it look bad, u can do a good job easily, well at least a decent job which is probably better than a car without clear. if ur doing the same color which i would suggest just wet sand the whole thing with 400 grit, like the WHOLE thing, it sucks but itll make the difference. then spray it without runs of course, and wet sand the whole thing with maybe 2000 grit, or clear it then wet sand and maybe buff. then itll be looking pretty dang good for fizz cans

I just finished it, I started it the 10th the day of the kmk concert so it had srh and kmk crap all over it in flat black paint on a white car. It doesnt look that bad, its not great but it is better than the rusty white it was before. I no longer have access to a camera, but I will get some pics asap.
