I went to San Diego for a long weekend and rented the Shelby Mustang GT-H. Since the reservation was unsecured I was worried someone might beat me too it but I was in luck. A convertible version was waiting at the airport when I arrived.
For those who don't know the whole story see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelby_Mustang for the back-story on these cars.
After renting a 6 banger mustang in Hawaii and a GT in Seattle I was ready to try out this version and was not disappointed. First of all the pic does not do this car justice. It is hot and turned heads everywhere. In fact when I got in it at the local starbucks I had three kids clicking snapshots of it on their cell phones.
The engine was ok. 325 hp felt kind of weak compared to the 400 on the C6 but the torque was way better than the GT I rented. What really surprised me was the handling. Vastly improved over the GT. The suspension was tight enough that you can actually bully into corners at high speed and the car wouldn't understeer nearly as bad as the regular one. The exhaust note was intoxicating and I can't imagine anyone not putting this ex-pipe configuration on their Mustang. It sounded awesome but not obnoxious. At least not to me.
As with the other mustangs the interior is awesome. I like the way it looks and the way it works. The seats were snug and the controls were in just the right place. Once again when I got home I hated my huge C6 steering wheel. The smaller wheel in the GT-H is just the right size.
Now for the fun part. I bought the V1 for the C6 but also I got it to travel with when I rent fun cars. I bought a nice travel case for the V1 so I can carry it along with my carry on (pix coming of that too). The V1 didn't do much on the ride up to Fallbrook or while driving up and down that gorgeous Mission road which I did many times. On the return trip to the airport on Monday was the real test. I decided that I would be ok getting a ticket and pushed the GT-H all the way down to San Diego. I ran between 90 and 100 with sprints up to 120 when traffic cleared. Props to local drivers that got out of my way and the Ford F150 that made a smart rabbit for about 3 miles until we switched and he could chase me. About that time the V1 gave me a Ka chirp and I took my foot off the gas and coasted down behind a van. The F150 had his thinking cap on and coasted down behind me. Sure enough CHP was shooting IO from under an overpass. Save 1. I pressed on for another 15 miles and ran up on a San Diego Crown Vic waddling in the right hand lane, no radar. He exited soon after that so I punched it again. Cruising down I5 right before the airport exit I see a couple of brake lights ahead of me. I coasted down and got smacked with another K band blast. This was from a handheld gun out the SDPD window. I quickly exited, returned the car, packed the V1 while the Hertz pickup agent asked me "so, did you pick up any tail in this ride?" To which I could only reply, "only the tail I brought with me"
More high res pix when I pick up a flashcard reader this week
No vids though. My camera-girl is an idiot.
