Still I like it better than the last one, but the aesthetics don't really make me want to buy one... sorry Staton but I think I am going to need a balls-to-the-wall test drive to appreciate this
    Not the 1998-2001 models... hehe.

Sorry, I forgot about that one, I struck the last gen from my mind, because IMO its ugly also.

These are the ones that I like.

And you are right Hatch < Sedan.

After a nice throrough test drive of the 04, 05, 06, 07, and 08 STi, I have to say the 06's felt the best all around. The 04s were wicked tail happy. I had a deposit on an 07 STi limited but the dealer dropped the ball. The 08s are a let down in front end looks and vehicle dynamics. Most of the members on NASIOC will agree with me on that last one. I would actually pic up a new Focus RS, assuming it is manufactured in Europe and imported, over this 08 STi.

^ Yeah, watch out for one which might not exactly have passed that "engine knock test"....thestaton, you might want to read-up a bit more about this one, before going with a second-hand '08.

    -----

Being as that I won't be driving it nearly as hard as some of y'all here ( brother gearhead PMoth comes directly to-mind ), I can honestly say that I'll be more than happy with its performance capabilities, as well as will be making a push at the wifey for this versatile 5-door hatch, this coming spring, when I'd have to make the decision of whether or not I want to hang on to my Legacy (for a long time).

The '05 STi lost-out, due to its much more boy-racerish looks, in my attempt to convince the wifey that it was the "right 4-door for me to step up to," from my even more boy-racerish DSMs. I think I might have had her convinced with the '07 STI-Limited, but that, alas, wasn't an option for me, when I'd needed it (I actually almost ended-up in an '05 WRX wagon, BTW, before I fell in-love with "Winky," my Legacy).

I truly love the stance and the overall aesthetics of the '08 STI. OK, so I'm not a big fan of its tail-lights, but some laminate can easily take care of that..... Although I'm decidedly not much of a fan of the '08 WRX, the wider, meaner, more purposeful stance of the STI just grabs me - and there's one that parks near to my Legacy, in my work parking deck, nearly every week, and I the more I see it, the more I covet it.

It just so happens, as JDS will remember from our earlier exchanges, that the '08 STI - in that dark grey color which I love, from thestaton's first post up above - is the only car that Anna, then barely two years old, *kissed* (yep, that's right, a full smooch) at the local car-show.

    Go figure.....

    too many doors.

they need to make it a 2 door coupe. I don't get this fascination with 4-door performance cars. to me 4-door and performance should not even be used in the same sentence.

That's my opinion too... hell when I was a kid (1 of 2) the family car was a 2 door coupe

same here. when I was a kid and it was only me and my brother left at home(I have 5 siblings) my dad had a 2 door Saab. I remember going to OH from MA every summer in that car it was so much fun.

I still think that's strange...and yet oddly encouraging

I still think this is the proper shape for any performance car:

Of course, preferably with the engine behind the driver, as such:
