I work in the Auto glass business and tinted windows is what thieves look for because they do not shatter because the tint holds the glass in place and makes less noise. I see it every day. All it takes is a screw driver at the edges of the door glasses because it is the weakest point.

Let's face it, if someone wants in your car they're going to get in. Alarms are nothing more then 2-way radios, crack the signal and they just got into your car without breaking anything or setting it off. To top it off you went high end with the ignition start type that let's you warm up your engine without getting in the car? Great! Now they can start your car remotely, and unless you have a column shift that locks unless your key is turned, drive off. Tinted windows are a much better solution in my opinion, if they can't plainly see that you have something there gonna break into the car parked next to you where they can already see something they want. As for breaking the windows for no reason when there's nothing in there ne ways, that would just be stupid on their part, but at least insurance would cover it.
One thing that I will agree with is, if someone wants my car they will get it one way or another.
I doubt anyone would go through the trouble to hack my alarm, to get my car. Possibly a high end sports car, or an SUV decked out with high end stereo, but my 94 Integra? I think not.
Just wondering, do you know anything about remote start systems? All of the ones that I have seen, as soon as you open the door, or step on the brake the car shuts off. And IIRC all cars have the steering lock if the car isnt on. Trust me if remote start made theft as easy as you make it sound, remote start would not exist.
As for tinting being a better theft deterrent than an alarm system. Are you stupid? Tint is opaque, not solid. You can look in any tint, and if you have a flashlight, you can see in just fine. If I were in the business of breaking into cars to steal stuff, I would look at the tinted cars first, seems like those people have something to hide if you know what I mean. Tinted windows dont alert you to their presence, tinted windows dont keep the car from being started, tinted windows wont page me inside my home, work, or school and tell me that my window has been broken and the alarm is going off.
Saying that tinted windows are a better theft deterrent/stopper is absurd.

As absurd as leaving an ipod in a car with a disabled car alarm in plain sight?
Tint is not the solution, and that is not what I was trying to convey -- I was trying to convey that tinted windows is about the same as having a car alarm as both don't provide any type of real security. For one, Car Alarms fail, as this one failed you. Sure you knew it wasn't working, but what about if you get it fixed and it goes out again for the same reason? Someone smashes through your car while you're sitting there with your bat and false sense of security. Meanwhile the Car Alarm has failed you again.
As for the opening a car door or parking break, my friend has a Scion with the same system, we found how to bypass that rather easily (Open the door, get in, close door, start car.) You can drive off with one click on the E-brake or permanently ground the wire even when the e-brake is off.
My point is Car Alarms are overrated. If you have to keep something in your car, throw it in the glove box and lock it.

This is why I never had faith in Compustar. A real alarm (DEI) installed properly is more than enough to deter anyone who doesn't have a tow-truck.

Your friends alarm was installed incorrectly. Or his unit was also defective!!

Car alarms are not overrated. If you drive a souped up civic or integra, they are. But they are not overrated. Stop reading that third party BS on Cnet. Also, most thieves look in the glove box first, armrest second, and under the seats third. You gotta get a little more creative than that. I have alarms on all my vehicles installed by me and I still take my Ipod and rd with me when I'm going into the movies.
Lucky, you are entitled to your own opinion and I respect that, but it just seemed as though you were misguiding DogGod.

Well I think we are on the same page then, gloveboxes do have locks on them, but if they already got in your car I guess they might take the time to pick/break it.

Jag is right tinted windows are easier to get into... a lot of the time you can just use 2 screwdrivers to pry the window out of its housing then stick your arm through the opening to open the door from the inside... i have a viper alarm system which i like a lot, it uses a motion sensor, so whenever someone gets close to it it just starts beeping and if they try to get into the car the alarm gets set off.
sure there are probably ways to defeat car alarms but the likeliness of that happening is very slim... if a car starts blaring people tend to run off, window tinting doesnt have that same effect.
also with the columns that lock, ive never ever seen a car that doesnt have one... other than that, you can break those things, theyre just metal pins or something so if you have one or 2 people giving a good crank on the steering wheel they can and most likely will break.
also doggod, dont run out there with a bat, thats liable to get you shot... just start yelling and call the police. if my alarm goes off outside my house i walk out theyre with a gun, other than that i try and get a look to see if people are there or not
Since there are a lot of people here who seem very interested in auto security, what are your thoughts on The Club?
My dad's TR6 doesn't lock (a thief would probably just slice right through the soft top ANYWAY, so no sense in locking the doors and getting it back with a ruined roof) so he bought a Club for it. It's not his ONLY line of defense, as he's got a LoJack installed as well, but how useful do you think that Club is?
