Check out the weather and traffic and general treatment towards bike riders before you buy a bike. I bought mine in a medium sized beach town in NC and loved it. Perfect weather most of the year, curves, nice people, park at front of buildings. I moved to Miami with only my bike and hated it instantly. The only people that ride here are idiots and no one respects you on a bike. I got ran off the road at least once a day... even on the interstate. In the summer it is either 90+ degrees (not jacket friendly weather -- jackets save your skin BTW) or pouring rain like crazy. You either cannot get parking spots or you get tickets if you try and park anywhere but a fullsize car spot.
If you can survive with a bike where you are moving than it is totally worth it. I went 4 months without a car in NC and loved it. It was quicker and funner to do everything. Exact opposite on a bike in Miami though...
i will definalty invest in some leathers. i dont dig road rash. and the dallas, texas area will ill be is relatively bike friendly. as long as your not being an idiot the people on the freeway will respect. course you always have that danger. the weather is 90+ from spring till fall and in the winter it gets down to 30 sometimes but stays around 40+...rain, it does rain a little less then often id say..the big concern i have with the bike is the insurance. is it like car insurance and you can have your parents(just dad) as the main driver? and on a rough estimate how much would it be for an 18 with a 600cc bike..more than 300bucks a month?

When I lived in NC I had the minimum b/c Yamaha didn't require coverage. In FL it isn't even required for a bike. I think my payments in NC were like $20/month. I literally said, give me the cheapest insurance I can legally ride with. Probably not the smartest thing with a brand new bike and brand new rider (each of us started at 0 miles at the same time). Oh well, me and the bike survived about 4,000 miles until I sold it
thats cool..here in texas i believe everything has to be insured or at least have liability. how many miles should a bike go for? i'll prolly get a used one, or would a new one be a smarter choice with warranty and such.

Gosh!!!!!! I feel old. Full coverage for me on the CBR 1Krr is $27 a month. The 848 is $25 a month. State Farm. Perfect driving record with multi-car, multi-line, good drivers discount. It'll drop more once I tie the KNOT and turn 30 !!!!!!

Also. DON'T be a SQUID!!!! Don't eVARRRR ride without a helmet like the rest of these squid zombies here in CT!!! Every time I pass them, I'm like man you'll have your day. My brother crashed his Gsx-r 600 last October. Hit his head and was out for 30 seconds. He landed in grass too. Sprained wrist and tweaked back was all he suffered from. He would have been DEAD if it weren't for the helmet. All this from a 25-30 mph lowside into the grass.

First off I would def. go with the R-6. Those things are dead sexy. Before I went to school I lived in Dallas 24/7. My dad has an R-1 and rides it as much as humanly possibly. There is probably about 2 months out of the year he doesn't ride it daily to work. He only had liability insurance for it and it's really cheap. And he told me it isnt even worth getting anything more than that. He laid his bike over like 4 months ago going like 5 mph and broke his collar bone in 4 places. He claims that someone behind him hit him but I always give him crap that he just fell over going 5 MPH and should give it up because he is too old lol.
But as said before, get a nice leather jacket and ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET. Racing my dirt bike, I would probably be dead without a helmet. It would only be worse to crash going 60+ on a street bike. When he crashed it he said it was cheaper to pay to fix it than to pay for a year of insurance. I think those little rubber cylinder looking things you can screw on the side of your bike really helped prevent more damage.
Of course the first thing he did when he got out of the emergency room was go to the yamaha shop to check on his "baby". I swear he loves that thing more than me or my brother...Hopefully one day I can inherit the R-1 from him.

First, I'm glad to hear that your dad recovered. Second, I have to totally disagree with you on your two comments, "He only had liability insurance for it and it's really cheap. And he told me it isnt even worth getting anything more than that." "When he crashed it he said it was cheaper to pay to fix it than to pay for a year of insurance." Honestly, riders should have a bare minimum of liability and comprehensive. It costs me just over $630 a year for full insurance on both bikes and I'm not married, have no kids, and am still under 30. I know your dad is older than 30 and unless his driving record is totally screwed, there is no way his insurance quote should be higher than mine. Also, tip over any modern day Japanese sport bike let alone an Italian SBK and let me know what it'll cost to repair. Back in 05, before I had frame sliders, aka "those little rubber cylinder looking things".... actually plastic, I slipped on sand in a buddies driveway and laid down my 3-month old ninja 636 @ < 5 mph. I had full coverage but chose to replace the parts out of pocket. Total was $900+. That total was well over my yearly premium for both current bikes. Then the bike was stolen a little over a year later. Better believe I got my money back.
