Default Changing the color of the gauge cluster in 97 explorer.

I just hate that stupid faded green color that my gauges are. I want to change them to red like my RD and aftermarket stereo. Does anyone know how to do this?

I'm assuming I will need to take out the cluster, and paint the back of the cluster red. Does this sound about right?

Are you talking about the background or the lighting?

I think you can change out the LED lighting or paint the cluster.

Sorry to not clarify. I am talking about the green lighting that the speed/tach/gas/etc... show up in. The gauge cluster is black, and then at night, the numbers glow in green. I want the speed/tach/gas/etc... to glow in red.

Example: I want all the white numbers and such in the picture to glow in red instead of green at night.

You need to find the lighting (either small bulbs or LEDs) and replace them. Don't even think about painting that

Thanks. I'll open it up sometime in the next few days and see what needs to be done.

they sell replacement LED's that are colored. just get red ones and you will be good to go. the other way would be to paint the back reflector red but thats a pain.

in the late 70's some of the pace car TA's got red light gauges. they painted the reflector florescent red. some guys have modified their stock one to look like the red by painting and others have used the LED bulbs both ways work good.

the only thing with the LED is I have heard you lose the dimmer function.

here is a site that sells the bulbs:

whitegauges.net - Search Results for "led bulb"

Mods, they don't sell anything that conflicts with Roy's site but if this needs to be deleted that's fine.

Well the one question I have with getting replacement bulbs/LED's, is that since the stock bulb is clear/white, and it glows green, doesn't this mean that there is a green coating on the back and therefore wouldn't getting a red or blue light just make it a gross color?

I did take everything apart and found that I need 6 194 style bulbs/LED's.

When you hold the transparent parts of the gauges up to the light, does the light come through white, or green? If it's green, you may need to find some way to replace the green with clear plastic, unless it's an integral part of the gauge, in which case you may be ****ed.

the rear panel on the 70's TA is a blueish green color and with the red LED bulbs it looks red.

you may need to paint the back panel white if its is too green.
