I suspect this is actually not a case of horrendously poor taste. I've seen that on other sports cars, like a Porsche 928. They do it in some Northern European country where there's a 300% tax on passenger cars, but converting the trunk into a truck bed allows them to register it as a truck and avoid paying the unbelievable tax.
