No doubt you've heard of On*Star. One of the features of this system is "Stolen Vehicle Slowdown" which allows On*Star to disable your vehicle if it gets stolen.
The drawbacks to On*Star are many. The potential exists for law enforcement, government officials, or even a bored On*Star operator to track your location and even monitor conversations taking place inside your vehicle without your knowledge. There's also the cost: On*Star ain't cheap - it will cost you $200 - $300 per year for their service, and even then you don't have direct access to all of its features (for example, you can't use On*Star to track the location of your own vehicle, nor can you do a remote-disable on your vehicle yourself - you must depend on an On*Star operator to do these things for you, and they won't necessarily do it just because you ask).
What if there were a device - let's call it "No*Rats" since it's kinda the opposite of On*Star - that you could install in your car that does the same sorts of things that On*Star does (unlocks your doors remotely if you leave your keys inside, makes a phone call when your air bags deploy, disables your vehicle if it gets stolen, etc.) but you control it directly from your computer or cell phone? What if, at the press of a button, you could lock the doors and floor the accelerator, trapping the thief inside and sending him careening off a bridge or into a concrete wall at 100 MPH (a feature which might be called "Stolen Vehicle Speed-Up")? At the very least, you could insure that your stolen car gets totaled out by your insurance company so you can buy a new one instead of being stuck with a former wreck that will never be the same as it was before it was stolen. And, of course, you could track the location and status of your vehicle in real time, anytime you wanted, at no extra charge. If your teenagers say they're going to a friend's house but instead you see the car being driven to a local club, you could take the appropriate action (preferably with a hickory switch). Or suppose you give your car to the valet and he decides to take it out for a high-speed joyride a la Ferris Bueller. You can be notified instantly via your cell phone when the car is moved, and disable it before it even leaves the parking lot. Lock the punk inside and then bring the manager over to can his dumb ass.
Would you buy such a system? How much would you pay?
